Are our cars luxury?
I was told today by a Nissan sentra owner that a 3 series is not luxury and although there's a 1 series now were still bottom of the line for BMW. I argued its still luxury but he wouldn't budge. What do you guys think?

I would say BMW are Sport- Luxury while Mercedes and Audi(VW) Lexus to a small degree are more Luxury-Sport.

I think all BMW's are considered "luxury" cars; but there are definitely more lux models. The 3 series is considered an entry level luxury car; whether or not it ranks above a 1 series is subjective, though I believe some of the materials available in the 3 are not available in the 1, just as some of the items in the 7 are not available on any "lower" models..
Out of all the cars I've owned, my 335 is my favorite, and I consider it the most luxurious based on fit, finish, materials, driving dynamics, technology, and looks.

Compared with most cars (and certainly his Sentra) the 3-series is pretty nice place to be. However a ride in a dedicated luxury car reveals just how lacking it is in luxury. Our cars err on the side of sport IMO.

As people said, the term "luxury" is relative.
I would consider in general, 3 series are considered an entry-level luxury car. A 3 series compared to a sentra would be like comparing Phantom to a 3 series so compared to a sentra, yes the 3 series is a lot more luxurious. I have driven a sentra before, and never again Hope this helps!

My car has heated seats, power seats, rear air, sunroof, power everything, roll down the windows and sunroof when not in the car, push button start, comfort access, 6 disk, adjustable xenons, like 30 speakers, usb and aux, nav, hd radio, adaptive cruise, paddle shifters, car tells me when tires are low, when to change oil etc etc.
Movie theatre type lighting around the car inside and out, a damn heated steering wheel just to name a few. How someone wouldnt consider that luxury i would have to ask if they were mentally ill. The damn car hands you your seatbelts for god sakes lol. Im surprised it doesnt drive its self!!! Hell it even recorded my entire ipod to the car when i plugged it in, bluetooth etc the list is never ending if you really think about it. |

I have yet to see this picture...hilarious.
Yes they are luxury, leaned towards to performance side. The ride may not be the best, but the sport seats and the drive alone are astonishing. Any car that hands you your seatbelt or can automatically switch the air from out side to in-cabin based on noxious fumes outside the car...tends to be luxury. Rappers talk about them, so they must be some sort of ballin It's like STI's and EVO's, they are a sporty econo-box. But if you tell them that they freak out

My 335i is the most luxurious car I've ever had and possibly ever driven. Granted, the only cars I've owned previously have all been VWs (and I thought my '02 GTI was pretty luxurious as far as smallish cars went) and Studebakers with two Porsches, a Dodge Dart, and an old E28 535i thrown in to round out the collection (I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but you get the idea.)
Let's see, I have a decent sound system, nice leather seats (and actually most of the interior appears to be leather other than the tops of the doors and the dashboard,) a nav system, iDrive, automatic climate control, heated seats, a heated steering wheel (!?!?!), etc. etc. etc... seems pretty luxurious to me, and a nice place to spend some time while going down the road. Really, the only things about it that don't feel purely luxurious are the ride (but then again I do have the M-sport suspension, not a bad thing) and the exhaust note, but those aren't negatives in my book. Well, some people might say that luxury cars don't have manual transmissions, but to me a manual transmission is a luxury ...and a guy with a Sentra is looking down is nose at a 3-series? Really? Mote, beam, etc. |

the BMW brand is a "luxury brand" in terms of market class.
the 3-series is in the "entry-level luxury" class however. Just like the C-class and A4.

The I-drive alone can tell you what kind of car a 3 series is...Luxury! Also push to start. Those are just two things, your friend is either dumb or just trying to rile you up.
