I guess this is as good a place to introduce myself as any. 25, work in finance in the health care industry. Recently totaled a Saab Turbo X due to there not being any parts for a repair that was needed so purchased a 2010 335i. The Saab was used as well and before that had a used Camaro. Working up to buying new but hate thinking about depreciation.

I'm 16 years old and i own a 2007 335i. My parents made a deal that if i pay half i could have any car i wanted for under $18k and that had a warranty, luckily enough i found my car for $16k with a cpo warranty!

I'm pretty chill haha

Having a 335is where I grew up is pretty normal. Idk, I guess you all would need to meet me in person to get a true opinion, but I am one of the most humble, honest 'kids' out there. I just don't like someone generalizing and saying "oh its that kid whose parents give him everything and he doesn't know the value of a dollar." I truly do feel that I earned everything that I've been given by exceeding my parents' expectations. And my parents may have money, but it's always been my goal to exceed what they have made both monetarily and personally, ultimately without their help.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
these are the people that make this world, worth living in.... lmao.

p.s. let me clarify my situation, i pay for absolutely every bill i have. i do not take a penny from my parents, as a matter of fact i give my mom 500 a month to help out with whatever she needs, i pay for hers and my younger brothers cell phone. i pay my own insurance, gas, credit card, entertainment. and i maintain a savings account.

now i simply get a little heated when someone says, "oh he must live off his parents." because that does not apply to all.

thus inspired a little curiosity to find out the percentage of people that do.

It's funny when you watch those 80's movies (I know most of the forum weren't born yet, but my nieces were watching Pretty in Pink and they're only in 9th and 6th grade)......when someone had a Porsche, they were necessarily wealthy. And it could be assumed they got it from their parents.

Today, times have changed. There is $0/$0/$0/$0. A 17 y.o. will almost never be able to get $0/$0/$0/$0, but they can have a parent cosign and then they can get $0/$0/$0/$0. Even middle-aged people do $0/$0/$0/$0, or they lease, with minimal down.

So it is conceivable that a 17 or even 16 y.o. can pay their own way. They are not wealthy, they actually have nothing. But our financial instruments that are available today can put that shiny BMW in their apartment complex's parking lot.

whereas a nice car in the 80's and even mid 90's indicated wealth, and impressed women, even women are smarter than that today.

The majority of jitter bugs that own a BMW they are still living at home with mama or dada.

when you get out in the REAL world where you are not dependant upon another you won't be able to have a BMW.

ya got the following responsibilities

Rent / Mortgage
Electric
Phone Service
Internet / Cable etc
Water and Sewer (unless included)
HOA Fees (home owners)
Gas
Groceries
Insurance ( for car, self, home/apartment)

scary isn't it ? better start aiming for $60k + yearly income

this is how i see it:

if you make 10k /year, shoot for 30k.
if you make 30k, shoot for 50k.
if you make 50k, shoot for 80k.
if you make 80k, shoot for 140k.
if you make 140k, relax..... then shoot for 300k.
if you make 300k/ year, pm me on partnership questions.... lol

my hero was my first auto teacher, he makes 360k a year off 4 shops in the l.a. area.... he is the one who inspired me to continue to be in the automotive world. if a simply mechanic with a passion, desire and ability is able to make 360k a year..... you know?

60k income is enough to drive a BMW? Now that's scary.

Why not ? It would also depends on where you live and how much rent or your mortgage is.
