don't get me wrong -- i listen to rap from time to time... but then, i get so tired of it because all rap songs (except for pac and biggie IMO) just repeat the same line over and over and over again.

"i's gotz deez dub twentee tWWWOOOOos...

abuse bitches... slap bitches... theyz alll bitches...
i's gotz deez dub twentee twooooooo's...

as much as i like the beat to a few rap songs,
i find myself getting tired of them a little too fast.
Because YOU'RE listening to the same shit.

There's plenty of other artists out there that don't talk about the same thing.

Lupe Fiasco

Common

Talib Kweli

KRS-1

... etc..

ok...my opinion: EVERYONE SUCKS LIVE regardless of genre no one will come anywhere close to how they sound on their cd...unless they're lip singing. You can't go to a concert and expect to be wowed by lyricists well because they're lyricists...their music is about the lyrics man

Being a good performer live is rare. It also depends on the venue's sound quality. It make a huge difference.

They don't need to - you buy their crap anyway.

Anyone who buys Rap Music should be shot.
I listen to a few good rap songs here and there, but I have to agree that most are terrible.. I mainly like the beats. (Not really sure if the songs I like are considered rap)
People think Lil' Wayne is the best rapper because he raps about everything, and can make stupid shit sound good. (A lot of ridiculous lyrics, I hate most of them)
Some songs I like are..
Blue Berry Yum Yum - Ludacris
Get Low - Lil' Jon (lol.. been listening to this song for years, just cant delete it.)
Way I Are - Timbaland
Party Starter - Will Smith

I mainly listen to Techno and Classical music. (Bunch of random music as well)
You should listen to P.O.S. though, they have some good music.

You just cannot make broad staements like this.
It doesn't take a genius to know when to take a profit, or how to manage money.
I'm sure he has financial advisers doing most of the thinking for him anway.

I think some of my favorite rappers are Ludacris, Lil' Jon, and...
Cant really think of any others that are pretty consistent..
Lil' Wayne has some pretty cool hooks, but I don't like most of his lyrics.
Like his 'Make it rain' part in Fat Joe's song, and that 'I feel like dying' line is tight also..
I could listen to those parts all day long.

Kanye West.. Everyone likes him because it is a fad.. I personally think he is an idiot, especially because of what he said about Bush during hurricane Katrina. (He was basically speaking against all whites.)

Some of my favorite lyrics are from Will Smith because he talks about how rappers shouldn't have to cuss to make a good track.
I also don't like how most rappers make up words if they cant think of something that rhymes.
I respect people that use actual words throughout their songs.

Also, I think it sounds like Commons beats are made by a 7 year old. :/
Timbaland has the best beats around.

It doesn't take a genius?

Yeah, getting rich isn't rocket science, you simply just make money when you can, that's all it is.

Right....

I guess all those billionaires and multi-millionaires weren't making briliiant decisions in the process of making their money....

IMHO, Kanye is a whiny little douche that bitches and complains b/c he's the bitch in the industry... She take my money~ while i'm in needd... what he means to say is, fidddy cent (which i'm not too fond of) made him is bitch.

I like driving to: Akon, obie trice, jadakiss, luda, pac, biggie, game.

other than that: billy joel, Fall out boy, panic, some pop... i have a very diversified preference...

and on a side note, i was wondering this for a long time... why is 50C called 50C?

Right....

The only reason he has money to manage, is because of his managers.

His music is only worth half of what people pay for it. (If not less)

from Wikipedia:

He adopted the nickname "50 Cent" as a metaphor for "change." The name was derived from Kelvin Martin, a 1980s Brooklyn robber known as "50 Cent." Jackson chose the name "because it says everything I want it to say. I'm the same kind of person 50 Cent was. I provide for myself by any means."

50 Cent's new stuff is pretty much garbage but Get Rich or Die Trying + Power of the Dollar were amazing...esp. Power of the Dollar...he was hungry and you could really tell

I have two rules when it comes to hip hop/rap.

1. Check the writing credits for the samples.

2. Buy the music from the original artist and enjoy the entire song (not a few seconds)

Cheers,
D.

That 'he was hungry and you could really tell' part was pretty lame.. :/
I guess this gives me more examples of how rappers steal from others.. (Not literally stealing their possessions..)
He couldn't even come up with his own handle.
I forgot to mention that I hate Kanye West because he stole 90% of Daft Punk's 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' song, and used it as his own. Most people that listen to rap and nothing else are going to say.. 'oh yeah.. thats that kanye song', even if they just hear the technologic part.
There are about 3 or 4 other songs that have stolen techno beats from artists as well.

Any more reasons why you hate Kanye West?

"Kanye West is such a ..."

You must really hate him cause this thread is about Jay-Z's new album in the first place.

Anyways, yeah 50 was more driven and motivated lyrically before his major recording label deal.

Now he's driven financially more than anything. I guess that's what happens when you go from having $500k to $100 million in just 5 years.

I've noticed that most artists first album is their best usually b/c they're "hungry" i.e. they're really determined to make it and work twice as hard...once the money comes in they lose that drive and their music isn't the same caliber. This isn't a rap thing either, it's almost every genre....and in terms of ppl who only listen to rap and will call Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" song as that "Kanye song" shouldn't be surprising....I'm sure Dido fans can say the same about Eminem's Stan or Phil Collin's fans over DMX's I can feel it....rap samples and if you only listen to that genre that's whats going to happen...you could say the same thing about half of Family Guy's jokes...they're rip offs or parodies of movies/pop culture....but I'm sure many people who are not familiar with the joke will remember an event in history as a joke from Family Guy instead of a event in history

I said I hate Kanye once, please try to keep things as they are, and not bend them to benefit you.
I guess I mainly just don't like people that steal other peoples ideas, and work.
This thread became a discussion about rap in general after the first few posts.

Forgot to mention Mickey Avalon is a pretty good rapper.
I like that he raps about stuff that ACTUALLY happened in his life.

Ya, Eminem is a pretty good rapper. I dont have any of his music though :/
Wish people would just give me cd's with good artists..
Never listened to Lupe Fiasco.

There is something about Mickeys songs that I like.. I don't know what it is.
Some of his lyrics aren't that great, but I like it none the less.
I guess its because he doesn't care, and will rap about whatever he wants to rap about, pretty funny too. A lot of his stuff is catchy.

They went to school. Thats how they made their money and learned to run their own businesses.
It's funny how you say that anyone with a lot of money is brilliant.. There are a ton of rich idiots out there.
You don't have to go to school to rap.

It seems like you immediately have to flame someone that says anything negative about rap.
Biased much?
