You need to buy a sport steering wheel and the matching airbag. No way around it.

Has anyone tried a "genuine" sport wheel off eBay from Europe in the $200-250 price range?

If it's a genuine wheel, it will work, doesn't matter where it comes from. You could likely get a used one for cheaper, they hold up really well unlike the M sport wheels. or you could do something like a cobywheel.

You need the airbag, they're different shapes. No way around it.

As stated, the Sport wheel has a round airbag. I remember buying a used Sport wheel for my E46, I simply sold mine to recover a little money. Luckily, the airbag was transferrable on the E46 but not the E9x Series.
