Thumbs down 1999 323ci engine cooked

This is an older model than you usually see here, but it is a good car and I'm wondering the costs of trashing it versus replacing the engine.
The engine is overheated and seems done for

Any suggestions on getting another engine please?

I have had a couple of qoutes for a partly reconditioned second hand engine for AU$4500.
Is this a good option?

If your car is a 1999 model, then your in the wrong forum for that. That's likely an E46 not an E9x model. Go check out E46Fanatics (https://www.e46fanatics.com/forums/australia.48/) and you should get a better answer there.
