Oil Change Interval
So BMW states 15K mile oil changes.
My Bentley book states 7500 mile oil changes. As a reference, my wife's MB C300 uses full synthetic Mobil 1 and states 10K mile oil changes. What interval do you guys recommend? I'm thinking split the difference and do 10K changes. I have a 2006 330xi that is out of warranty with 114K on it. Thanks. |

I change it in the spring and fall. Twice a year. drive it 15000K per year so approximately every 7000K.
Had a 2001 BMW 328i and found sludge buid-up when changed as BMW recommended. Might be overkill but better to be safe than sorry. Mt 2 cents |

i usually do anything from 5-8k miles. really depends on when i have time, but i try my best to do it at every 7.5k. as the car gets older, i might do it a little earlier at around 5-6k. i'm out of warranty and at 61k miles (approx 6 1/4 years old)

its not a waste. It all gets recycled into new oil or fuel oil. either way someone is going to use either that recycled oil or fuel oil... when crude is $90+/bbl, used oil is not wasted...
and on the subject of 'waste of money' changing at 3k, oil is cheap as chips. A rebuilt N52 would run $3k+ just for the engine (no labor). Thats a shite load of oil. If you have ever rebuilt a few engines, you know you can spot the one that had long change intervals regardless of the brand of oil...

I'd say 5-7.5k miles depending on your driving habits. I do a lot of spirited driving, so I try to do it around 5k. If you're the one to drive more conservatively, 7.5k miles should be fine. As everyone's said, 10k is pushing it as it will just result in a shorter life cycle of the engine, and BMW's "recommended" 15k is just nuts!!

From what I understand, all e9x use an onboard computer to check oil level. Simply use the little control on the top left toggler to select what you want to check(ie. control check, oil level, set time/date/brightness, etc).

Thanks bro. I tried it but on my oil level all its has is a Min/Max line and there's like a little clock ticking, so I'm not sure if that means it needs oil. Would you be able to help on that, like what would it display if the oil level is good or what wold it display if it needs oil? Please.. |

And the clock ticking means that it's figuring the oil level - it takes a couple minutes (best to check when oil is hot), once the clock goes away, it will show a bar graph as to your oil level. There is no way of knowing how much to add exactly if the line shows below Min, you pretty much have to guess and go by experience... Nice, huh?
