Many dealers will try to tell you that ANY modification will void the vehicles warranty. If you go to the dealer with mods, be prepared to defend yourself. Its a sad situation.

Maybe that is what YOU need to do...

The OP's question was if aftermarket wheels will void his warranty and the answer isn't as clearcut as a yes or no. Very few single mods (or even a series of mods) will "void a warranty," but if a dealer believes that the mod caused a failure then he can deny a warranty repair on that failure. Let's look at wheels as an example. If the aftermarket wheel is "substantially similar" to the OE wheel (size, wheight, offset etc) then the dealership shouldn't deny warranty service on a suspension related issue. If, however, your new aftermarket wheel/tire combination was outside of the parameters set for wheels for your type of car (including BMW accessory wheels for your type of car) and the dealer believes that the wheel caused the failure, then he could (and should) deny warranty service on that failure. For those of you that spew the MM act as a magic bullet to ward off warranty woes, I'd strongly suggest that you read (and try to understand) the actual act. In very basic terms, one of the provisions is that a manufacturer cannot deny warranty service based on the mere fact that a "substantially similar" non-OE part is present on the car (by definition, this excludes ALL "performance" parts as they are [also by definition] not substantially similar [or they would be "replacement" parts]) However, nothing in the act prevents a manufacturer from denying warranty service on a failure if they believe that the non-OE part caused the failure. Late on, I'll let you know about your remedies if a dealer denies a warranty claim that you feel is unjustified - you won't be happy... |

I can sasy Yes they do if the dealership or BMW feels bitchy or doesnt like you. Had mine onfor over a year with springs and struts. Took to dealer many times for problems with brakes or steering or griding noise up front. Moved to a different state and had a legal run in with bmw. Took car in last week for grinding nse again and wow, they wont look at it due to aftermarket non spec wheels and suspension. They went to town, voided all driveability issues too because of aftermarket tune, Dinan(But Dinan is contacting the dealer and helping because the dealer said they cant even get the diagnostcs to run cuz of Dinan which is not the cause because had them run on car before)Thaqts why i like my Dinan, they wantedd to talk to them while car was there but deqaler didnt call them so when i rtakeit back next week theywill talk to them whilei am there. They are some nice guys and on top of things.

Some dealerships even sell aftermarket wheels in their parts department.
I would laugh to death if they tell me that my warranty is voided because of aftermarket wheels. |

Ask your service manager. I find that every dealer is different. I was told that it would not be an issue and they also confirmed that my wheel and tire warranty would cover my aftermarket wheels.

Long story short, anytime you mod a car in anyway when you are under warranty, you are taking a gabble with the dealer. Your best bet is to contact the dealer before hand and ask them if the part (wheels, intake, exhaust,etc...) will void your warranty. This is the reason why i wait until the warranty is up before i mod my car. Or at least make is so that i can convert it back just in case.
