I was thinking of swapping out my stock filter with my HP Autowerk filter gathering dust on the porch come springtime, but I'm not convinced there any gains to be had.

I agree. But even if there is, I hate to reoil something with possibly damaging my MAF sensor. A few people I know have done it. A dry one sounds more reasonable for me.

If you're worried about oil, you can try putting the filter in a pillowcase and vigorously swing it around a bit to get air going through it and some excess oil off before putting it back in the car. Obviously you'll want to make sure you don't hit anything, so do this outdoors (where people can watch and judge you) or in a big room indoors (where your friends/family can watch and judge you).
