So my car wouldn't start after I got to work. It powered up fine and everything seemed ok expect that when I pushed the start button I got nothing at all. So I googled the issue and came across a posting that suggested to disconnect the IBS and try to start the car. I did this and it worked!

My battery is original so I expect I do need a new one but until today the car has been fine.

My question is: Is this really a faulty IBS or could it still be a worn out battery and the IBS is functioning correctly by not letting the car start because of a worn out battery?

It say's in the above link the ibs would throw a code.
I'm betting on the battery especially if you were getting long
cranks before starting.
That's a good trick disconnecting the IBS I hadn't heard of that one before.

Since the IBS controls the charging rate, is your battery still being charged without it?

I don't know, that is a good question. I plugged the IBS back in after I started the car. It seems to be ok after it starts.

So I put a new battery in it and I still have the same problem.

I guess this is just a bad IBS?

It is just the negative battery cable assembly. Looks easy.

Also, I believe the battery should be registered if either it or the IBS is replaced in order to avoid over or under charging.

So I had left the IBS unplugged overnight after trying to trouble shoot my starting issue and new battery installation. In the morning I had the same problem where it wouldn't start after I plugged the IBS in but then it would start when I unplugged it. Side note: I had a brake light on the dash after I installed the new battery.

I drove to work and parked it leaving the IBS connected. I go back to the car for lunch and and it started just fine with the IBS connected and there is no brake light on the dash anymore.

So was I just impatient with the new battery installation and the car needed to reset itself over a period of time with the new battery and everything hooked up? If so, I guess the root of the problem was a worn out battery. The old battery was at 12.18V fully charged. I think that's only good for a 30% - 50% charge so it makes since the IBS would keep the car from starting.

As a side note I was able to program the CAS with the amp hours of the new battery and I have not been able to get the ECU to register the battery. I hope it will work when I get home. I have another thread on this topic elsewhere on the forum.

In case anyone cares, I installed an EverStart Maxx-H6 from Walmart. $98 battery made by Johnson Controls. The amp hours is not a stated specification but I called the 800 number on the battery (before I bought it)and they told me it was a 72AH battery. It took 2 calls to get the info. The first call I was totally stone walled saying it was proprietary info and Walmart would not let them release it. The second call was a much nicer girl who asked the engineering department for me.
