Do not purchase BMW Navigation Update! TomTom is terrible..
My folks just retired and purchased a 2012 335xi! During a recent visit, my father had the Navigation Update for their car installed and the TomTom maps used by BMW are not accurate for the Washington Metropolitan area. The system gives inaccurate directions for addresses in DC and in the Maryland Suburbs. My older 2004 330xi that uses Navteq CD based maps is able to find the same places without issue! The new BMW navigation update is so bad my father went out and purchased a Garmin at a Best Buy during his visit. I also loaded Waze and Google Maps on their phone as a backup.
My folks are pissed and have already contacted BMWNA and their credit card company to rescind the charges for the update. If you're considering installing these maps, please reconsider! It's a waste of time and $$!

No credit card company will rescind the charges so that avenue is in vane. Their best bet is to work with bmw na for a refund and flash back to the old software at no charge. Even this will be difficult because then they are admitting that their maps are faulty. Good luck.

were the previous maps loaded on the car more accurate?
maybe you were expecting too much in a single update |

Navigation has never been a strong point in BMWs, but if it were as terrible as you make it sound I think something would have been done.

Tom tom is good here, don't like Garmin much, some do though.
I have an 07 idrive with 2011 maps. Hated it at first compared to the Tom Tom I was using. I like the free traffic info on the bimmer though, quite accurate for the most part. |

I live in the DC area and updated my map to 2013. No problems with it so far and I use it at least once a week.
And when did TomTom start making maps? The only 2 companies that make GPS maps are Tele Atlas and Navteq. |

Nope. So far it's gotten me to every destination I asked for in NY/ NJ.
Mind you I'm not much of a weekend warrior, but seems fine, with the occasional Turnpike quirk... |

Same here. So far I've had no issues with the maps anywhere in the DC/Baltimore metro area but I haven't used it to navigate in downtown DC yet.

No issues in Boston and around Massachusetts....even noticed updates down the Cape region from new construction, so I'm pleased with it.

I loved the Google Maps and the overall interface for the Audi, if it only had a larger screen and more of the media features, it'd be perfect! But the built-in WiFi hotspot, slot for a SIM card, and the two SD card slots were awesome features I wish BMW would integrate into their system. |

Whoa, it seems that BMW and TomTom are listening to the negative reviews of their Navigation Upgrade.
In order to address Cartographic errors found on the BMW's Map Update, TeleAtlas has created a Map Insight page so that users can help correct map reporting issues. Here's the URL: http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php I hope this helps!! |
