After you've used your leather cleaner of choice, wait a couple days and then apply Zaino's 'Leather in a Bottle' --it's the one and only mass-market preparation which actually imparts a credible leather scent to your interior. The only disappointing aspect IME is that it doesn't last as long as I'd like. So I just apply it again, especially if I'm going to be taking guests somewhere

BMW Dakota leather is a top-coated leather which means there is actually a petroleum sealant applied to the leather as part of the tanning process. Oil-based cleaners and conditioners like Leatherique, Zaino, etc. are ineffective for top-coated leathers because they are unable to penetrate the sealant and end up sitting on top of the leather. This is why you notice that the products don't "last" a long time when applied to your seats.
Instead, use a water-based cleaner and conditioner that is able to penetrate the sealant and hydrate the leather underneath. For maintenance washes, wiping down the leather with a damp microfiber is enough - you could also use a water-based interior cleaner if you have a lot of dirt or contaminant build up. For deeper cleans, leather masters is a great water-based product that is effective on treated leathers. |
