They die when it gets too cold. I lost all mine in the 'big freeze' two years ago. Make your pond deep or invest in some form of heating.

I think valuing is tough. My immediate reaction is that if you're unsure then it's probably not worth much . The ones of any true value are specific breeds with specific markings - don't ask me what's what in the Koi world though.

My two largest ones that died a couple of years ago (in my pond) where about 40-50cm and real beauties but i'm afraid they don't do well under -10 degrees.

I'd imagine £100-£150 for a decent sized 'standard' fish

Just having a nosy on gumtree to see what others price there at:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/pets/last-f...look/102033637

Hes asking £35 for 11-12" fish, and £40 for 12-13". Be worth taking a better to look to see what the going rates are.

Go and have a look in a local fish shop, see what they are selling similar size Koi for. I would expect in the £100-200 range for a 30cm fish. You shouldn't expect as much as that because buying from a shop gives the customer some guarantee etc....but it will give you a ballpark.

Its only really when you have a specific breed or can trace a particular provenance of a fish that it becomes worth any serious money.

Oh and I'm no real expert but I do know moving a fish from a tank environment to an outdoor pond is highly risky and very often ends badly........

Thanks everyone!! i'll upload a photo later to show you guys.

I'm not even sure if its any special breed. the last owner probably bought 5 for a tenner and had them in the tank for the last 20 years or so!
