My Car Will Not Pull When I Put It In Reverse Or Drive . Also When I Put The Car Into Reverse It Sais Its In Netural On The Cluster. But It Will Go Into Drive But It Will Not Pull. Also There Is A Yellow Gear That Comes Up On My Cluster. Any Ideas On The Problem.. Thanks

If you're under warranty, then take it to the dealer. If you're not, take it to the dealer and bring money. There's no real way to tell without knowing the fault codes.

Tow it to a local shop who can read the OBDI. Don't take it to the dealer unless you plan on spending a lot of money. If you have a buddy that has a shop and the reader have him come over with the tool and read the codes.

Your best bet is to tow it to a local shop that you know can read codes and have them diagnose.

try pulling the shifter boot off. there is a small button underneath there that you press down on and then you can shift.

Isn't that for when your cars battery dies out you can shift it into neutral?

it goes in gear at the shifter,while in reverse and drive it acts like it is in netural. the car will rev up in reverse and drive but, will not move.

Just tow it to a local shop with an OBDI reader and they'll diagnose for you. It can't cost too much.

I took the car to the same dealership where i purchased and had all scheduled maintenances and John in customer service called me to notify me that the car needed a new transmission and that the cost would be about $6,400"

Unfortunately that's how BMW fixes transmissions, they replace it. If I were you, go find a reputable mechanic who specializes on BMW trans, or try to find a used one via eBay or wrecking yard. Let us know what you decided to do.

Yup. Your best bet is to find one at the junkyard and take it to someone who knows what they're doing to swap it out. It won't be hard finding a shop that can do it, finding the transmission may be another mission.

I remember reading about this phenomenon. The old Auto trannys they used on the E39 and E46 were prone to having reverse fail. They say the symptoms to that is a lot of lag between selecting R and it actually engaging. I guess it depends tho, since my father's E39 has had that issue for the past year considering how it was driven I am suprised that R has not gone yet. He likes to pop the car into reverse before it stopped moving backwards...

only thing about that is i live in rednecky ky. guys around here don't know how to spell bmw much less work on one. closest bmw dealership is 150 miles away. that's why i was asking for help diagnosing the problem.. of course taking it to the dealer would proably be the best.

found the problem, had a cracked trans pan all the fluid leaked out

Must lift mine up and see if Im lucky and can fix it , not replace the whole transmission...
