Just looking for a little more power...Cobb or JB4
So now that it's finally warming up here in good ol' Minnesota, I am finally going to chip my 07 335i.
I currently have 71k miles and have an extended warranty through the BMW dealership till 100k. My car is completely stock. After searching, I have narrowed down to the JB4 or Cobb Accessport. I dont plan on going to the track and this is my daily driver. What do you guys recommend? From reading different threads on this forum, most people seem pretty happy with both set up (but Cobb being easier to set up, but costs more) Please help me decide. Any recommendations will help greatly. Thanks! |

This has been addressed many times, so be prepared for some potential flaming. With that being said, I just ordered my JB4 on Saturday. For me, the decision was both price and convenience. I will probably run the stock bypass map 75% of the time since I do a lot of commuting, and the "on the fly flashing" is a plus. I also ordered the DCI and am looking forward to the install this weekend. I now have tints, Cyba 3.8 chrome tips, and after the DCI and JB4, I will be done with any further mods.

I too am all stock. I went with the Cobb AP. Very very happy with it. Just in Stage 1 sport (91 octane) I can feel a large difference vs stock. Gobs of mid range power. Drives just like OEM but with more power. The other day I switched to Stage 1 aggressive (93 octane) and threw in 100 octane with my 91, and can notice an even bigger bump vs the Stage 1 sport. Very easy to install. Take 10 minutes and go to Cobb's site and watch a couple tutorials if it makes you more comfortable. Total install time the first time I uploaded the Cobb AP was approx 20 min's. Switching from stage 1 sport --> aggressive takes 2 minutes. I also changed my oem spark plugs to new oem spark plugs just to play it safe. Car had 30k miles on the original plugs. I told myself I was not going to mod more, but of course now I have the itch to buy a FMIC.

JB4
off the shelf maps seem to put down more power, alot more features, meth and e85 compatible, cheaper, most jb (if there are more) will have upgrade programs. many "pro-tuned" cobb cars, put just as much power down as a map 5 jb4 e85 car. To me... if you to spend more money to have the same or even less power, then why would i buy it. Yes cobb can tune just like anything else, but ive seen FBO(minus exhaust) with some e85 put down 430hp-500tq. just with a jb4 on map 5 or map 7. No pro-tuning needed. countless dyno and threads of e85 jb4 cars putting down impressive 400+hp numbers. For protune which is200-400 bucks to get similar numbers to jb4, with the already high price of the accessport doesnt make sense to me. Plus the features the jb4 has is just more impressive then cobb. (on the fly map switching, gauge hi-jcking, code read outs, hot/cold protection. etc etc) and i laugh when people say get cobb for an easy install. If you have a brain and hands, you can install a jb4. Its so easy and once you do it, you only get better at it and faster. I can install a jb4 in less then 5 minutes, you can too. Plus its a much smaller investment so if you dont like it, sell it and get a cobb! But just try the jb4. you'll love it Plusss the fact you're buying a tune... to get it tuned(protuned)? what? Both will get you where you want to be Both have return policies so pick one and try it and if you are not happy you can grab the other.
My vote is for JB4 G5 ISO Mike |

It depends. I went with the Cobb because it is easier to install and uninstall when I go to the dealer for service. I just don't like the hassle of the piggyback system going in and out of the ecu. The Cobb just uses the OBD-II port and requires no tools whatsoever. If you don't mind the inconvenience and getting your hands dirty, I would go with the JB4. The Cobb also has some cool features to it though. I like the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times it can display. Do some more research and see what you want out of it.

if you have a warranty id go with cobb. dealers can be a pain and having to unisntall/install over and over is not that fun. although with a 07 im not sure you have much warranty left.

I ended up purchasing the Cobb AccessPort for the ease of install/uninstall. When I bought the car at 58k, the dealership sold me a Penske warranty for 3yrs/36k miles.
The Cobb should arrive later this week! I cant wait to feel the power difference. Does the DCI make a big difference or is it just for looks? |

I went with the JB4 because of the ease of changing maps (steering wheel controls), adaptability if I run different octanes or fuel, or add further mods, and the guys at Burger Tuning will respond to questions very quickly. (Customer Support)
I've heard great things about both tunes. Either one is a winner. |

Both have there ups and down, if you've never worked on this car before the JB4 is kind of difficult to install your first few times, but other than that I think it's a better option for someone not looking to do any other future mods.....yet

I've heard of a lot of people switching to Cobb or Vishnu to get away from the JB4.
I also know people currently running the tune who have problems with it. And the owner of a motorsports company that is highly active At the shift sector events, etc.. Said that cobb is superior as a tuning solution. Do I have any real evidence to support my claim? No, only verbal verification, and I think that's enough. |

If you want to run meth easily in the future, JB4. If not, Cobb. Both are great, it all depends on your goal for the car. If you can't make up your mind, stack them.

But alas, you know a couple people who are having issues with the jb4 and have 'verbal verification' from a company saying cobb is superior (which, by the way, even if one accepts that as true, does not make the jb4 junk). Somehow you think this is enough of a reason to emphatically state that jb4 is junk and not only is it junk, but that it is junk is the 'truth'. lol. okay. |

Pick your poison. They both have some advantages. The JB4 is cool because of the hijack feature. The Cobb because of ease of install. I got the Cobb because I don't have to unplug anything.

I'm going to stray from the crowd and suggest ESS. Very smooth for daily driving and quite a bit of power when you want it.
