I dont think the height is any lower since the od of a 225 45 17, 225 40 18 and 255 35 18 are all same!
I meant bumper height actually. I know tire height will end up being close if not the same

Hey Gary, it seems like this guy is asking about putting 225/40/18's on his rear stock wheels (requiring 255/35/18).
Am I understanding what you're saying correctly; that it may work to stretch 225/40/18 on rear (255) wheel? Or, do I really need to get a 255/35/18'' winter tire? Because there's really only 1 tire available in that size on TireRack, I would like to run a slightly different size, if possible, aka 255/40/18 or 245/40/18, or similar.

Thanks so much for your help.

I (regrettably, and now am buying snow tires again) sold my 17'' winter setup at the end of last winter.

My coupe is RWD and I'm on Eibach Sport struts & springs. Though the car is low, I have been shocked at how well it did in the snow, I mean, actual 4'' of fresh snow or more. Last year in Philly we had a couple hard storms, and it ran great Continental Extreme Winter Contact tires.

Yes, the Blizzak WS80 comes in both factory sizes, so you can use 225/40R18 front and 255/35R18 rear with no problem.

I am thinking about going with a 17" square Sport Edition A8 winter setup on my 09 335d Sport Suspension e90.

Your site recommends using 225/40/17 (25.2 inch diameter) tires but I like a bit more space for chains.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 235/40/17 (24.5 inch diameter) tires -- bit wider in front shouldn't be a problem, but the overall wheel diameter will be a good half an inch less (if my chart is correct), besides affecting the speedometer, will it have any negative effect on transmission/differential.

225/45R17 (which are 25.0" in diameter) should be the recommended size as opposed to 225/40R17.

235/40R17 will fit but no winter tires are made in this size.

i bot a set of nokian hakka r2 winter tires, they are the best... i was amazed at the snow and ice performance of these tires, i can't imagine any are better... others may be a little smoother and quieter but they don't have the grip that these do... my 3 series xdrive felt like a tank with these on last winter, do not hesitate to buy these
