A few questions regarding the stock amp wiring.
I've read that the amp in the e90/e92 is fed by an optical link from the headunit?
Is this applicable to all idrive and non-idrive units? or just logic 7 regardless of availability of idrive? I've seen a few aftermarket amp installation samples here, and it seems that most users would just tap into the amp output using a hi-lo converter or use the JL audio Cleansweep? Would it be possible to use a processor with an optical input and bypass the stock amp for good? i.e. taking the source straight from the headunit. Is the optical cable in the E90/e92 a toslink, or some proprietary bmw jack? I'm hoping that the headunit would still be able to control the volume in this case, I'd still like to control the volume via oem means, not with an aftermarket knob. Is this possible? *sorry for the noob question, I've never dealt with optical units before. My old setup was full aftermarket, rca from hu to amp, but in this case, I would still like the idrive functions and steering controls. Thanks in advance. |

You need to keep the stock amp in place, its programmed into the vehicles fiber optic communication, the bussing is a loop, take one component out of the loop, and you loose all functionality of everything on the bus....

HI-Lo converter is best option. JL cleansweep is sweet, but too expensive. you still keep all steering wheel control/stock knob control. or you could just tap into the rear speakers and use speaker level input but that means less quality IMO. just go with HI LO converter

pretty weak considering JL should know better alot of people would want to run 6ch. I still want to have a processor before the amp(aftermarket). Quote:
So, regardless of idrive or logic7, ALL E90/E92 have the optical bus loop? |

I've no idrive and only premium sound option/ no logic7 I kept the 4channels out of the DSP for 'normal speakers' and 2channels bridged for the underseat subs. I've replaced all speakers before amp upgrade. The original AMP is out and no problem so far. maybe when dealer will run diag they will get error on AMP ??? http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48617 Watch ebay for pretty good price on DSP. got it for $150 new in a box. |

Anyone with WDS care to check which cars have the Most bus between the amp and source? What about a european model (uk model) with idrive and "hifi loudspeaker system (option 676)" ? Or a I-drive with option 677 "Hi fi sys prof DSP" ? |

First, if you have iDrive there's no question it's MOST.
If you have a MID, I believe you also have MOST. If you have the basic radio, you don't have most. Based on the above, all U.S.-bound vehicles have MOST.
