2012 335is with Battery Problems

I purchased a pre-owned 335is convertible a few months ago that only had 3000 miles on it. It now has around 5500miles. Over the last month, it's been giving me high battery discharge and low battery errors. I have a battery charger and have charged it overnight, and a day or two later the issue comes up again.

Last week I took it to the dealership and all they did was charge it overnight. I drove it, and left the radio on (engine off) for only 7 minutes and the low battery error came up again! My commute is fairly short so I can understand if it's not fully charging, but I had just picked it up after a full charge.

I've seen alot of threads on battery issues, but I don't remember seeing a fix.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

[SOLVED...I hope, see post #17]

I called the service rep immediately after and he didn't even return my call. I haven't had a chance to schedule another service appointment.

When I brought it in, I told them that I've charged it with a charger several times in the past and the problem still existed, and that I hoped they would do more then just charge it. The SA said they have to follow the process, otherwise BMW wouldn't pay for a new battery. Apparently the process included wasting customer time as well.

Just take it in. If he doesn't answer your calls, ask the operator to walk over to him and make him call you

Contact BMW NA customer service, ask them for the name and postal address for who can accept legal documents. Tell them u are having an issue with your car battery after several attempts and you are looking to
initiate a manufacturer buy back. I'm sure they will toss in a battery for u in the next visit. The dealer cost of the battery is not the same as te customer cost. They sell it to u for $500... but their cost is like $50.

I was at the dealer about a week ago with my '11 335is e93. The guy asked me if I wanted to do the "battery recall" for my car. I thought he was talking about the battery cable, which I answered that they did it a couple months back.

His answer was "No not the battery cable but the actual battery itself." He stated it was the first time he had seen that kind of recall but it popped up when he checked the service with my key fob. Might want to check into that...

There was a battery recall a few years back, my service advisor told me that the car requires a re-programming to incorporate the increased battery size (70amp to 90amp), may throw codes without the update. If you have the 70amp battery, it was never replaced.

And if your car has had the cable recall, have your dealer check the IBS unit (which is in the other cable). An intermittent IBS fault in mine resulted in low battery warnings, stalling, and ultimately a battery failure.

So when I took the car in last time, I asked him if the car had any recalls and the SA said no. Not sure if he was being lazy, or whether the '12 doesn't qualify for the recall. Do you guys happen to have the bulletin numbers on these 2 recalls?

Thanks!

The number on the ticket for my '07 E91 battery cable recall was SIB# 61 02 13.

However according to this article, your SA may be right:

Just to update this thread, I took the car in yesterday. When the SA put the key into their reader, a recall popped up immediately. Not sure why that didn't happen before.

In any case, here's what it says on the service paperwork:

B61 16 13 E93 Battery
Recall Work Package
50099 W
1 61-21-2-353-812 EP Battery 92AH: 612010

5869 Performed SIB 61 16 13 For battery reall defect code: 00 61 89 03 00
Labor Operation: 00 61 870
Labor Allowance: 7 FRUs, Check and replace the "Banner" battery (Coding conversion with ISTA/P is not required)

No charge. It's only been a day so I can't say definitively this fixed my problem, but I'm very hopeful. Will update this thread if the error pops up again.
