Are you planning on having your next oil change tested as well? I think that for sure would get out any reservations whether the car was still breaking in or not (which I doubt it was after 2k miles). And I agree with 15k being crazy.

Just drive your car hard enough that the computer tells you to change 9k or 10k (like mine is), then you don't have to worry

I think BMW is just being cheap saying 15k. No oil lasts that long in these kinds of cars. At the very least do one oil change between those, then its every 7500 which is not to bad.

What was your "Fuel %"? (in the Blackstone report area below "Barium")

I thought DI engines were showing relatively high numbers.

Just another reason to change the oil more frequently. BTW, the hard core over there doesn't like Blackstone's analysis.

All motor oils sold have the same viscosity "cold" in florida. That is to say the coldest it gets here is maybe 50 degrees and at that temperature there is absolutely no difference. in the cold start viscosity.

That is what the number before the w stands for. It makes a difference in freezing temperatures. In order to get this number lower, and the freezing temperature viscosity lower or "thinner" additives are used. Additives equal less protection. So if there's absolutely no need for you to have a lower viscosity in freezing temperatures (Florida) then there's absolutely no reason to use 0wXX oil. To the contrary in fact.


As for using 40 weight instead of 30, the higher the viscosity the more protection it affords PROVIDED it can get into all the small clearances of the engine. Also oil thins as it heats up and the oil is normally a slightly high 230-240 so going with a thicker oil is nice.


Some people go with 60 weights but for me that's too much of a departure from spec to know for sure if it's still protecting in all the small clearances.



As for if there's a change in temp, I would love to be that guy that says he saw a MPG increase after X mod or a drop in oil temp from this or that even though theres no quantifiable reason to say so, but I'm not.

I think it is actually the EPA's fault. EPA wanted to see all auto manufactures reduce the amount of waste oil generated, and guess what most if not all auto manufactures had to do? Extend all oil service intervals! At the same time synthetics were introduced and used with extended service intervals, but 10-15K oil service? Way too long!

well I did an oil change today in the middle of the recommended interval and I can confirm that the oil was black and dirty. Spent the $60 people.
