Damn you electronic dipstick!
Got the oil changed on my 335 today. At 7qts the "dipstick" was only reading 3/4 full. We added half a quart and it didn't change. Ended up putting the rest of the bottle for a total of 8qts. I called my bmw tech and he said it's fine, just don't put in 10qts! I figure the computer would give a warning if the oil level was too high, but it reads full and OK.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? This computer dipstick is just stupid. It's fine if you include a traditional one as well, but no "real" way to check the oil level: dumb. The bmw tech I talked to said they all agree and that BMW is going back to the old way. DIY dipstick kit anyone? |

Jesus this has only been discussed about a hundred times on here - doesn't anyone read the manual? It's right there in black and white, 6.9 quarts with filter change. Put in all 7 quarts - it's only a little less than 1/2 a cup extra. It's not like you're going to keep a quart bottle with a half-cup of oil in it. 8 quarts is WAY too much and 6.5 is not enough. Put in 7 and be done with it.
