Track wheels!

What are some good track wheels out there for our cars that look nice ? Im looking for something light and wide. preferable 8.5 front and 9" rear minimum. It would be nice to be able to run 255s in front...

I have to agree with Volks as a great track wheel for both strength and light-weight. They are one of the better "values" for a proven forged wheel. BBS are a bit on the heavy side and quite expensive, I think they only wheels better than volks are maybe I-forged and then of course the #1 HRE but good luck on the price there...

To save money and look for cheaper options (without sacrificing decent strength and light-weight) I have been pretty impressed with some of these Linea Corsa wheels.

ooo, so maybe we can get some pictures for the corresponding wheels for people to look at here and choose? I was also recommended F14 forgestars 18" wheels. the 18x8.5 come in at 17.6~lbs!!! And i think the design is great . I have v710s on right now so thats kinda the style that i like. Ideally it would be nice to find something id like to run all the time instead of storing one set of wheels on the side.

Also... maybe someone can help me... if id like to run a 18x9.0 in the front and 255/40/18... what kind of offset should i go with to allow me to run that? et40? et42? Will i be able to clear the inside strut?

(Im currently running 19x8.5 et35 on 245/35/19 re-11s and dont have rubbing issues when cornering.)

Depending on your offset, you might need hubcentric spacers, or fender rolling. So 9 inches is dicey, 8.5 should be no problem with 40 et.

Also, if you select 17 inch wheels, tires are much cheaper.

I use Kosei K1 17x8.5 with 255s all the way around. I know they arent pretty, but who cares? They were cheap, and very light.

Not 100% true. IForged and HRE aren't that great for tracking. In fact, HREs are even banned from some tracks.

Sorry no drop, but they are ET40 so it shouldnt be an issue. Especially the rears, they are REALLY tucked in the back.

That is a shocker to me, did they break on the track one day or something? With their spun-forging process they are rediculously strong and light-weight wheels. hmm...

FYI : For people running KW v3 suspension.

Stock 17x8 et34 wheels, and stock 225 rtf's. [Edit : fixed typo that said '255']

kw v3 suspension, set fairly low.

clearances
rim to strut : 19mm
tyre lip guard to strut : 17mm
tyre tread to spring perch : 15mm

a 255 tyre would spread the tread out ~15mm each way, so the tread would just touch the spring perch.

Moving to an et30 would give you ~4mm space between tread and spring perch.
A 'wide/square running tyre' would further close that 4mm gap.

Im guessing you meant 225s Scheherazade? 255s are way too wide for a 17x8.

Let me caveat my comment by saying I am, no wheel expert. But I think I read some tech document on tirerack that says the amount by which the tire extends on each side depends on the rim width. So, it might be extending less than 30mm. I'll go look for it now!

225 tyre -> 255 tyre = 30mm difference
Brands will vary, but you will on average have 15mm more on each side (section width AND tread width).

Granted that the difference in section width only approximates difference in tread width.

Rim width will only affect your section width and the width/spread at the tyre bead.

The tread isn't going to stretch, so you're gonna have a rather constant road-contact-surface regardless of which rim you mount the tyre on.

Mount a 255 on a 7 inch rim, or on a 10 inch rim, the tread width will be almost identical.

The shoulder may roll out a little if you stretch the fitment like crazy, but its very minor.

The reason I mentioned 225 vs 255, etc, is because with KW v3 coilovers, the first thing you have to worry about space-wise is hitting the tread on the spring perch.

Hence "ET and tread width" are more critical than "ET and rim width".

The situation changes for stock suspension.
