Oil Change When?
Hi Guys !
It has been about 2 months since I own my new 335i. Yeah its a blast to drive at times.. rest of the time its even better lol Just a question : I went for my state inspection last week for another car I own and the guy working under the hood of a BMW told me that the oil needs to be changed every 5000 miles no matter what the indicator shows. My current indicator shows "OK" oil level and I have already driven past the 6000 mark.. The guy tells me not to follow the manual - indicator for oil changes as it may hurt the engine in the long run. Who do i believe ... help.. |

There's a DIY on how to do the oil change, or go to any BMW workshop and paid around $70-$90 for the oil change..
Usually it's every 5k miles..that's what I used to do. |

Search this forum and the DIY forum for "oil change." You'll find the answers you seek.
FWIW, I did a break-in change and since then have changed about every 7500 miles. I've paid for 2 changes and BMW has paid for 2 changes so far.

Hmmm... State inspection guy or BMW engineers... I have to say I would go with the latter on this one.

Get as many as possible. Do your first fairly early when the car is new, then every 7500 miles I'd say, ragardless of what the manual states. I have still not heard about an engine that didn't do well b/c of too many oilchanges.

You don't need to more than 15,000 miles (or whenever the computer tells you it's dirty) but it never hurts to do it more often, the only downside of changing oil is the cost, BMW will pay for them at ever ~15,000 interval but other than that you can put it in as often as you want so long as you're willing to pay.

does your state inspection guy know that bmw runs fully synthetic oil?
unless you've got lots of money for oil changes, why wouldn't one trust what BMW themselves recommend?

I'd change that oil ASAP. 5-6k intervals are probably okay once the motor is fully broken in, but if that were my car I'd have changed the oil a couple times already. New engines have higher traces of wear particles that slough off during the run-in process. Letting that crap slosh around in the crankcase isnt doing the engine any favors.

i heard through a friend of my cousins sisters mechanic that these cars can go months if not years without changing the oil. now if you want to talk windshield wiper detergent, well thats a whole different ball game.

If you're leasing the car, I wouldn't even worry about changing it early...

Any oil change in less than 15K miles is a waste of money and time.

dealership will say when the service comes about so around 16k....
people here will say every 4-6k miles--some people do it more often... you get a free one @ your first year whether or not your due for service. just call for an appointment and say its been a year since i bought my car and i would like a free oil change. (i think this should be around 10k) my advice is to get one done at 5k... and get a freebe at the dealership at 10k and then get another one at the dealership at your first service which should be around 15k but +1 if your leasing who cares right?

If it's a lease, just go another 9k and do the 15k changes. If you bought it, I'd recommend 1200 miles. I don't see why an M has a manditory 2k km oil change, while the non M's can go 25 km, it's anyone's guess. Point is, if leasing just follow the mfg's recommendations, it's their financing co's car. Why do more than required? If it's yours, although a 1200 mi. change seems unnecessary, I don't see anything wrong in treating your non-M like an M. Oil is not that expensive.
