E90/325xi winter tires - runflat vs. non runflat

I've done a good bit of research and reading on winter tires. I live in upstate NY and get a good amount of snow in the winter. I'm considering getting a second set of winter wheels/tires. I know I already have AWD and have driven a Subaru for the past 7 years.

One thing that I have read is that, everything else being equal, runflats are much worse than non runflats for winter tires. Can you gurus weigh in on this? Why would this be? Does the harder sidewall REALLY have that much impact? My job requires me to be able to commute 33 miles each way, regardless of weather. Travel is via back roads that have a 55mph speed limit and very little traffic. No 4 lane highways.

Here's what I'm thinking. Get a set of 5 non-runflats, which would probably cost the same as a set of 4 runflats. Keep the spare in the trunk. I think this way, I might even end up paying less. Tirerack has the Firestone Winterforce for $77 each vs. $136 each for the cheapest runflats.
