You would have to call or visit your Canadian Border Crossing to find out if there is a Green Tax on the model you want to import.
13% in Ontario...basically if your car is a nasty gas guzzler, you'll have to pay the Green Tax.

see this excerpt here;

"If your vehicle has air conditioning, you must pay an excise tax of CAN$100. You will have to pay additional excise taxes (Green Levy) only if your vehicle has a weighted average fuel consumption rating of 13 or more litres per 100 kilometres and is put into service after March 19, 2007. The Green Levy applies to automobiles (including station wagons, vans and sports utility vehicles) designed primarily for use as passenger vehicles, but not including pickup trucks, vans equipped to accommodate 10 or more passengers, ambulances and hearses.'

I've checked a few sites, and the used prices down south don't seem to be all that much cheaper then they are here? Am I missing something? Do dealers down there drop $10k off the price easily or something?

E.g. I've heard you can expect to get an '07 335i with Sport Package for around $20K in the states, yet all the prices i've seen are in the high 20's/low 30's, just like here.

What value are the taxes charges on? Is it like when you buy locally it's wholesale or invoice whichever is higher?

This is where I got really frustrated, but at the border with a $30,000US vehicle out in the lot you don't want to get into arguements.

Purchase price + AC Levy + Green Tax THEN the 6.1% Import Tax THEN the GST (back then)

Paid tax on a tax and then a tax!!

Not saying that anyone should do this, but if bought privately the seller could list 'whatever' price he wanted on the sales agreement .. Nudge Nudge, Wink Wink, say no more

Interesting... So say I pick up a second hand porsche, I tell the guy to write me a bill or what not for a declared lower price?

you could write whatever price you want but you would have to justify it to border services as to why its potentially less than the book value (they have full access to car values)

It has to be within reason. Im going to bring up a 2009 K1300S from the States in March, I wanted confirm that Im not going to get rapped at the border so I stopped in last week to ask a couple of questions.

With bikes you only pay the HST.. THATS IT.

The guy said that I should print out the ad/post/listing of the bike I am buying along with the sales contract, just so there is a paper trail to follow.

I think you could claim about $5000 to $8000 less on a $30,000 vehicle. Declaring $5000 less would save you $900+ in taxes alone. (HST @ 12%, Import Tax @ 6.1%)

Does anyone know if the X35d is built in the US based factory??
