Navigation Update

Hi Guys,

I noticed on the weekend when i drove to the Gong that my nav wasnt available. It read something like "please insert navigation disc"...Not really useful if im restricted to Sydney CBD driving.
I was wondering if there is an update that's available and where would i be able to source this from? How do i find out what version is currently loaded?
Also, when i am using the nav, it's basically a block arrow and not a map as I thought it might have been...is this because it's an outdated version?

I've got the car booked in at BMW later this week and was hoping to get an idea of what my options are before then.....still cant believe the effort to change a measly parking bulb! It's nothing like what the manual says.

What model is your car (an E46)? If so, then you probably have a DVD based Nav system where all maps are stored on a DVD. A DVD should include all maps for Australia (and maybe NZ?). To find the version, you need to eject the DVD from the drive and read the label (for version#, year, etc).

In the centre console underneath the AirCon unit, there should be 2 slots for optical disks. I think the bottom slot is for the Nav DVD, press the eject button next to it.

Sorry to break it to you dude but you have 'business nav' not 'professional nav'

Business nav only gives you arrows on your 6inch screen, professional nav gives you full maps (with TV tuner) on an 8.8inch screen.

I thibnk you are wrong here because I only have business nav on my 2009 LCI and I have full maps on my 6" screen.

I saw that with my friend 2009 LCI 320i with innovations too. I was quite suprise. I thought you can only get the full map by paing $4000 upgrade to 8.8" which is what I did.

Stupid sales game me the wrong info.... $4000 for to get 6" to 8.8" is very steep.

The OP's 330i could have the Professional Nav upgrade. Only he can answer that.

I think full maps were only introduced to Business nav with the iDrive upgrade in LCI models (which yours is), and they may now run from some sort of flash drive vs direct from DVD? Although I've never used it myself, I've heard a lot of people complain about the pre-LCI Business or "Radio" nav with arrows.

I also paid for the Pro Nav upgrade but don't forget (at that time) you also got a hard drive based system (80GB with 12GB reserved for music), voice recognition and TV. $4000 is still steep for all that, but that's BMW for you. I hope that Pro Nav is standard when I buy my next beemer.

Oh yea... forgot about the HD, reconition and tv. $4000 for all that isnt too bad i guess at the end of the day. I hope that pro nav is standard too.

Oops I should of said it SOUNDS like you only have business nav.

IIRC:

If the car is pre-LCI and has a 6inch screen, then it's business nav

If the car is pre-LCI with a 8.8inch screen, it's professional nav

If the car is LCI regardless of screen size it has full map compatability

So, to the OP, what year is the car and any idea how big the screen is?

Thanks for all the info guys.

Car is an 05 330i. Looks like it's the business nav. I didnt realise all the differences when I bought the car....only myself to blame for being too hasty and not researching more. There wasnt too many 330s on the market so i jumped at the one that ticked MOST of the boxes.

Also just realised the car came with a burnt nav DVD. I've gone back to the dealer who is now sourcing an original one for me.

Yeh I was in the market for an E90 330 for a while - couldn't find too many, even fewer in good condition with low ks.

What's wrong with the burnt nav dvd? (from a functional perspective)

The main problem is that it doesnt work. It says something like "medium can not be read".
But in principle, if i bought off a dealer expecting nav then i wouldnt have expected them to sell it with a burnt disc unless otherwise told.
If it were a private sale, then I guess i'd just have to bite the bullet.

KC i'm in the same boat - 330i with business nav. Boy was I pissed off when I found out there were no maps but the greatness of the car brings me inner peace anyroad I should have done more research. There was a guy on here selling the upgrade for about $3000, maybe have a look in the classifieds.

The upgrade to an 8.8" screen can wait for now...i should have done more research when i was looking.
Currently shopping for some new wheels and the possibility of coilovers.
There are so many rims to choose from! Finding it hard to pick just one! Lol
