Anyone in the Atlanta area?

I just called United BMW and they said they I would have to verify that I have the oil cooler installed and to turn my wheel all the way to the left and get out and see if there is a oil cooler installed.

I did that just now and no oil cooler. WTF? I thought the oil cooler was REQUIRED for the PPK Stg 2???? I was only asking him about Stg 1 and asked him (Daniel) three times and he confirmed - yes, you have to have the oil cooler for even Stg 1.
Something sounds fishy, as BMW should be able to tell by your VIN if your car is eligible for PPK or not. I thought that for 2011/N55 cars, the only requirement was to have the sport or M-sport package with the increased top speed limiter.

Call the guys at Global who did mine last week and they should be able to verify this through your VIN. They also matched United's price, so no problem there, either.

Contact Colin in parts:

Colin.Blackledge@atlantabmw.com

and my CA, Garland Helton, who ran all this down for me:

Garland.Helton@atlantabmw.com

Thanks 111R!

I'll call tomorrow and update everyone on what they say.

That is odd that Daniel didn't ask for my VIN, and again, unless I'm reading the literature on page 1 of this post incorrectly - the oil cooler isn't required for PPK Stg 1....I'll go back now and re-read just to make sure I didn't miss something.

Did you have an oil cooler already 111R?

If I don't have an oil cooler and some 335i e90's do (thinking the 335is does right - or no?) then I wonder why I would have to wait for a "retro fit" oil cooler.

Anyways - let me call them tomorrow and see if I can get a straight answer...

Thanks,

BMW of Concord. Note: I originally purchased my car from them and asked if they would give me a break on their package price which is about 830 (not including tax) on the BMW web site. So I don't know if the price I got is available to everyone or just existing customers. For what's its worth, I was their 1st customer to have this mod done and it was completed with no issues.

I think what they're referring to is the PPK version 2, which has the extra hardware. The one I got was just the software upgrade, which if I understand correctly can be installed on any sport/M-sport 2011 335i. I have whatever comes standard for these cars, nothing more. I didn't check for the oil cooler he's referring to.

Ok, well maybe it makes more sense afterall. I don't have a sport or M Sport. Just a plain jane 335i.

Oh well - I'm about ready to say screw it and just go with Cobb or another aftermarket after my warranty runs out.

I would really want to do this BMW upgrade since it falls under the warranty, so I could do it now, but oh well...bummer...

Thanks Guys!

Ok finally got around to pulling the files off my Zoom H1 mic (mounted in the trunk in the little compartment next to the battery) and doing some editing of a couple runs pre and post the PPK. You'll need good quality speakers or descent headphones to really hear the differences The 'burble during engine overrun' as BMW so eloquently puts it is most noticeable in the second file... Basically before it was vrooom blip vroom when shifting, and now it is vroom burble vroom when shifting.

135i Accelaration - Pre PPK 1st-4th.mp3

135i Acceleration - Post PPK 1st-2nd burble.mp3

135i Acceleration - Post PPK 1st-3rd.mp3

Let me know if these links don't work for some reason. [Edit: You may need to do a "save as" on the links in case your IE or other favorite browser doesn't know what to do with an MP3]

I have the BMW performance exhaust which gave a lot of snap crackle and pop on overrun with the stock tune (as an aside, I think the PE sounds fantastic and although overpriced it's a great addition, my gripes with it are the positioning of the tips and the sound on start up which is so loud and garrish people in the parking garage jump when I start it up and then look at me dissaprovingly):

Point of this post is that the Stage 1 kit did not add to the burbble or crackle of the Performance Exhaust, which is probably a good thing because it may of been overkill if it had.

I am hoping for a bit more aggresive exhaust sound from the PPK. My neighbors are the kind of people who would likely look at me disapprovingly if my car were too loud as I drove through the neighborhood.

I just got off the phone with my dealer, they made me pay by credit card over the phone before they ordered the Power Kit for me. The parts department manager had never even heard of the PPK, it amazes me sometimes how little the dealerships know about the products that BMW markets. They are charging me $599 plus tax and one hour of labor and I will have it installed next week.

What dealer was that? BMW of Concord never asked me for any money until the job was done. Here's my take on the mod:

I have an 09 with the N54 engine. 1st thing I noticed was a huge reduction in turbo lag. It feels like the power delivery is much smoother and it pulls stronger. My 1st thought was this is how BMW should have sold the car in stock form to begin with and not offer as an extra charge item. BMW claims a .2 sec improvement in 0-60 but I can only confirm that my butt-o-meter was satisified with the end result vs the money spent.

There are far better tunes out there for a few bucks more but I'm not willing to risk BMW voiding the remainder of my 2year warranty. To me the 740 price (tax included) was worth it but I would not be willing to spend 800 or more that some dealers have been quoting for this tune.
About the only thing I was disappointed in was the Exhaust Burble. Basically, my exhaust sound was unchanged. Per BMW documentation it states:
"For some models, the kit also produces an “exhaust burble” during engine overrun conditions, a new feature only applicable to Power Kits installed on 135i and 335i vehicles with engines manufactured from March 2010."

Hmmm...maybe I should have asked for a bigger discount

My car definitely has this exhaust burble, happens every time you take your foot off the gas. I've only had my car for about a week and I think it is kind of annoying. Oh well. Love the tune!

Got my kit installed today. Mine is an 07, so they needed to install a new DME. Install and programming took about an hour and a half - DME came preloaded with base software and then a couple of updates were applied along with the performance software.

The GOOD:
My Car pulls so much stronger than before, especially in 2nd, 3rd gears, lag is greatly reduced if not all but eliminated except in highest gears at low rpm. Throttle response is much smoother. I am kicking on the DSC in first and second gear and around corners with moderately aggressive throttle and that didn't happen before.

The BAD:
I lost my great sounding exhaust! After the HPFP software update my car came back sounding really great - lots of burble in first and second gear and on rev match downshifts - a lot like the BMW PE, only better. It sounded so good I would drive whenever possible with the windows down to hear it and it was audible with the windows up. I have run it with the exhaust flap mod since new. That's all gone now - it still sounds similar under full throttle, but the great sound I had for free is no more.

Definitely a noticeable difference in sound for the stock exhaust when shifting and letting off the gas.

It's probably more to do with being an N54 vs N55 ... I would assume the tunes are different.

This was at Humboldt Bay BMW, I think basically they dont want to get the PPK from their supplier and if I were to back out and cancel the install they would get stuck with the "part", which we know is only an access code, underhood badge and install instructions. I think I paid like $757 for PPK, tax, install, and a loaner car.

My 2011 Coupe already has SOME burble in the engine overrun, but I am assuming the PPK will magnify that sound a bit louder.

I agree that BMW should have included this tune as the stock power from the factory, but BMW has become more of a marketing machine, nickel and dime you for every little add-on and enticing you to get upgrades to the latest and greatest features.
