If it's a heatsink then it's a cooler, period. Whether it's explicitly designed to do it or not doesn't change the heat transfer out of an object. Yah the pan qualifies, just like the fins on an E85 differential.

However, I was thinking about the N52 oil<->coolant heat exchanger, not the turbo car oil radiator setup, so yah I am totally wrong in many ways here including the complexity of the system in question. There are no radiators or thermostats for N52s with the heat exchanger installed, that I can see. The system just pumps coolant up into the filter housing. That is in fact just a heat exchanger. (Dunno how I missed the title of the thread here.)

See Diagram below:

The confusion is that any one of these four parts are sometimes and incorrectly referred to as "the oil cooler". Which makes the Oil Cooler seem like a singular part.

In addition because the Oil Filter Housing is bolted to the [Oil] Thermostat it always appears as if it is one part when looking at it and when ordering the internals gaskets.

Thirdly it is usually also sold as one united part when ordering a replacement Oil Filter Housing from a parted car or reseller.

This all lends to innocuous confusion of the Oil Cooler!

See page 79 in the N55 manual:
I have my head in N52 land. Yes, the turbo cars have an entirely different setup.

None oil cooler n54 have the same setup as n52 so you can have it retrofited on your car as well. Best would be to shop for used parts.

To further derail the conversation, I have the N52 heat exchanger on my To-Do list. It's the only reason I even poked my head in here to begin with http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1412435

Do that if you sit a lot on traffic. If not oil cooler retrofit from n54 is better solution.

Sorry to bring this thread up, but I was questioning this .

If I have a 2009 335xi, with sport pack, sold in Canada, Alberta (cold climate) and I have a oil cooler ;

- is because it's a loaded 335 ?

- LCI model?

- Retrofit from previous owner ? (btw he didnt recall adding this, car has only 1 previous owner, however he said might be possible, since he had a front accident early 2010 that required front repairs, no engine swap. But doubt the insurer will add ''mod'' in the fix... )

Never really thought about the oil thermostat in that regard. I'm in Massachusetts and my 07 335i has both the cold weather package (obviously) and the oil thermostat. I find it is useful in our Summer months.
