OEM Type C USB Port in E90

In case anyone was wondering the USB type C port from a G series car fits in the E90 with little modification. If you had a factory 6fl car with the USB hub I think this would be pretty much PNP. The port has direct power running to it so it could actually charge a modern smartphone.

Huh cool, if this actually works I would put one in mine. Do you have a part number?

Great find. Does the car recognize USB C audio as aux in?

The part number is 84108711939:

Not gonna lie, that's a pretty insane retrofit for those who can benefit from the usb c capabilities.

I wonder how many watts this hub will output.

If this works for usb-c audio on a CIC I'll buy it tomorrow.
Even if it just works to charge my phone on an NBT evo I'm interested though.

This is really, really interesting to me. I was just about to start a thread discussing increasing the current on the e9x USB ports in order to charge modern day phones.

I assume, for this, you'd need to find a straight 12v source for power? I believe our USB ports get their 5V power from either the MULF or COMBOX...but, I could be wrong, haven't dove into it yet.

The downside to the G series USB C port is losing the AUX input jack...but, I could always just relocate that.

I got cold outside so I stopped messing with it. I Tried using it plugged in as a glove box usb port with a CIC and it did not work. I am going to try it with my NBT Evo some time today.

Since the port is longer I may need to notch the rear hvac tube under the center console.

Anyway the Data Type C ports do 500mah and the power only ones do 3amp

I dont currently have a USB port, I wouldnt care about any of the USB functionality since I installed the bluetooth receiver from your old thread.

But if I could pop this in and use it for charging so Im not using the cig outlet Id be interested. Ive never been comfortable leaving those cheap as adapters after one (a branded one from best buy) caught fire in a friends car.

Plus if it was 3a it could actually be used to really charge while navigating and whatnot, where 500ma just keeps up.

I might put in the dual power-only one when I rewire the new wagon. I never use the USB for data.

Yep they make one and two port versions that pump out 3amp. You just need to tap the cig outlet and wire up the port.

You'd think there'd be a BMW branded dongle...

I would take power from the phone cradle pre-wiring in that is in at least all US cars.
