I want my car back! Got any 18" factory wheels and tires I can borrow?
Argh,
Schomp got my car for an oil cooler retrofit which is now a requirement for the Performance Kit. Problem is they have to flash the ECU for the oil cooler and that requires a Sport package flash which changes the speed limiter to 155 mph. I have the stock 17" on the car with H rated tires. Dealer will not release the vehicle until I install the factory 18s wich according to tirerack come with either W or Y speed rated tires. I have ordered a newer set of style 189s with PS2s from a member in Miami but he's awaiting for his new TPMS to arrive before he takes off the wheels and ships them to me. Is anyone close to Highlands Ranch willing to let me borrow their 18s if they are currently stored for the winter? I can come pick up the tires, take them to Schomp, pick up my car, take them of and deliver them back to you all in one day (I hope for this Saturday). A $20 Starbucks gift card will be given as a token of my appreciation. Thanks, Jim |

Hey, if I get my car back before the end of the week then you can borrow my stock 18's. My car is in the shop getting a new bumper and the 18's are on my car. I am getting new tires put on my M6 reps so as soon as I get my car back then I am going to throw those on.

I have my 18's (style 189s) sitting in my garage...dirty as hell, but would work for your purpose. I'm down by Parker and Arapahoe.
WTF, so they now require you to buy the factory OC, even though they installed it without it for you? Are they fixing that lower grille of yours? |

I have the 18" sports package rims (style 162) with original stock summer tires sitting in my garage. Just cleaned them up last weekend. I live in Highlands Ranch, less than 10 minutes from Schomp. Let me know if you want to use them.

Id tell them to bite me and let me leave. What were you supposed to do if you had snow tires mounted that were H rated? Its winter for cryin out loud.

Another reason why I didn't buy from Schomp. What a stupid rule. Dackz has a point, if you have snows on it shouldn't matter.
Idiots over at that shop... |

Even if he doesnt have snows, what if he did have H rated snows? Point being there are H rated snow tires and H rating shouldnt matter one bit, they are just trying to get you to buy some rims I think. I would call another local dealer and ask them what would happen if you brought it there. This sounds super shady to me. I get the raising of the limiter but that shouldnt matter, its illegal to drive over 75 here

Guys,
Thanks for the responses and offers to use your wheels. I've been swamped at work and the loaner keeps me going for now. The decision to use the 18s is not a Schomp decision but BMWs decision, according to the Master Tech. The same thoughts about H rated tires and winter tires were argued with them but to no avail. raceyBMW, they are supposedly looking to replace the grills. Will see... SAM67, since you're in HR and close by, I would like to take you up on you offer first. I will call Schomp and see if the car is ready to be picked up tomorrow first. I will PM you when I get more info. Thanks all for your comradeship, Jim |

Thanks jetz, make sure you let us know when you're back here again.
The OC retrofit is not yet completed so I won't be picking it up this weekend. They're waiting for some part. Needless to say, I'll miss the meet this Sunday. |

Rules are rules. Laws are laws. OP goes out with H rated tires and has a failure, BMW gets sued for 2 million. Obviously not going to happen in USA, but that is the situation in Germany.

I find it hard to believe there are any laws that limit the tires that should be on a car. Otherwise Tirerack and Discount Tire would be in constant litigation considering they happily installed H rated blizzaks on my car and my car has also been in the BMW shop twice and released with these said illegal tires.

My car is on W or whatever sport package rating winter tire I have and they are non flat and they let me go. I give BMW/Schomp a big time fail on this. Laws are laws in Germany but we dont adhere to those here on our freeway system. We have speed limits, so those speeds are atainable |

I'm also sure that marketing helped as well. I mean, there is got to be something about a car's image when top speed is advertised at 155 MPH vs. 130 MPH, that makes BMW money right? Engineering comes up with an oil cooler and 18s with the proper speed rating, the lawyers review and approve and marketing publishes the cool specs in trade rags and web sites. If it only did 130 MPH, there would've been all kinds of negative publicity. I have not seen a N54 review that was not based on the Sports package with 18s. So it's not all about German laws. In my case, I think it's a pure legal matter and if a part allows a car to do 155 MPH (the Sports Package/PPK tune) , the car needs to safely support that speed (the wheels and tires). But still, this is BS for real world scenarios...
