I'm guessing a lot of you change your oil every 3000-5000 miles so you wouldn't notice the quart loss, but for those that don't change their oils for over 7000 miles, has anyone noticed that your oil gauge will read one tick short of "Max"? For me, this happens roughly between 6000-7000 miles. So my engine sucks up a quart of oil every 6k miles? Would a catch can help alleviate this problem? Or is this considered normal?

It is normal. I ordered a catch can a couple of days ago. Some of the oil is probably not going where we want it to.

Yup, happened to me too. My service guy warned me it would happen. Topped it off for me when the warning light came on.

Mine does the same quite frequently...I either dump in half a quart or bring it in.

Check your intercooler, I found a few missing quarts in there.

Is all this oil getting "blown by" more prevalent in turbo engines compared to NA? I have a catch can on the way anyway, but these mills are tight enough; I would think they wouldn't need a quart of dino juice every 5-6k miles until they hit 175k miles.

I remember checking the oil gauge last week. Went down almost 1 quart and I just passed 6k miles.

So, can anyone confirm whether or not if I installed a Catch Can... I would roughly find 1 quart of oil in the catch can every 6-7k miles? Would that be a fair test to determine whether or not a catch can is doing what its supposed to do?

Can anyone with a catch can chime in as to how much oil it has collected over 7000 or so miles of driving?

thanks

I changed over to 15W-50 Mobil 1 Motorsport Oil 22,000 miles ago (from the normal 0W-30 LL04 BMW suggests) - I change the oil every 6-7,000 miles anyway, but I've never had to top up in between. Also, I've just installed a catch can, just in case, and on installation I checked the ancillaries for any excess oil - I only found a very little bit in the rear blow-by tube... checked everywhere else, and nothing...

And it's not as though I don't drive the car hard - track days, Nurburgring trips etc etc... The 15W-50 oil must be doing its job well, especially at high engine temps..

About a quart every 5000 miles. If you drive more highway and less short trips, then you will get more miles in between top offs. And yes, this engine does use more oil compared to a E46 M3. Given the forced induction nature of the engine, its perfectly understandable.
