Looks like the proper install process is as follows:
1) 'I Stage' flash
2) install hardware
3) update software

Someone mentioned that step 1 is not needed. Can anyone else confirm?
The hardware went down in price. It is going for $250 from Tischer.

Just not something I wanted to screw up...

Works like a charm though!!!

I had it installed. Does require coding. That count?

Yes. thanks.
I just ordered the part and the SA agrees to let me do the install and they do the programming.

Taking the car in on wed to start with I stage programming.
then I get the car for me to install hardware and then bring car back for
final programming.

Wish me luck.

I took the car in today for flashing and the dealer tells me its not needed to flash first. They told me to go ahead install the hardware and they will program it after. We'll see how that goes.

A couple of open questions if you guys know...

1) the actual location of the interface box is behind the glove box or behind the radio?

2) I'm thinking on routing the cable that plugs into the ipod to the center console. If so, do I still need to remove the glove box?

Well, I started working on this today.
3/4 done. All I need to do now is reinstall the radio, and put back the trim, and the glove box.

I'll do a new DIY because I took a lot of pics and will provide more details of the process. I also clocked myself. Not rushing, but just a log of how long it took.
I took my time and lots of breaks.

Thanks for doing that, I'm very interested in how it goes for you. If it works with just a single visit to the dealership post DIY install - I'll order that kit and install it ASAP. I guess I'm lazy, but multiple trips to the dealership for $$ programming has made this DIY much less appealing to me.

How much are dealerships charging you guys for the post-installation programming?

BTW - I read on another forum where EAS said that you just need the programming post-install, not prior to.

I went to my dealer and actually spoke with the tech dude who actually does the job.
He tells me that they could go either way.
But for them, its better just to plug the car to their computer once instead of twice.
So, he advised to go ahead and install the hardware and then bring the car for programming. I was quoted $125 for coding/programming.
I will post my DIY next week and will also report back on my visit to the dealer.

Here is the main issue with installing the parts yourself. If you dont do it right, it wont program. And then you are out money. And if there is ANY problem with the program, you can be damn sure the first thing they are going to blame is YOUR install. Thats why I had them do the install and programming. I also had bluetooth put in at the same time and it took them 3 days to get it all working. On the plus side, they only charged me for 4 hours of labor for entire bluetooth and ipod retrofit.

You can see my experience here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=175658

It's not rocket science, I'd prefer to do it myself and save a few hundred - and put that towards actual mods.

Check.
The risk is there. it increases if you're not into this kind of work.
I've been reading and reading this mod for a year. unsure about the outcome.
I decided to do it after talking to my dealer.

There are many steps where you can screw up and cause some cosmetic
damage to your trim.
The instructions are over simplified.

I feel pretty good about the install. I do have one concern...
Not bending the fiber optic cable too much.
The OP mentioned the importance of this cable.

I'm not putting all together just yet. I'll bring the car with its guts out.
If I messed something, he will have easy access to see what I did.

As for programming problems, talking to the dealer gave me peace of mind.
They insisted its not necessary to do stage 1 programming before the hardware install. So, if there are problems there, I have my Service guy as witness that the tech dude said what he said.
I'll post my DIY today and have the car programmed on tuesday.

Crossing fingers and wish me luck.

That's smart to get the programming while everything is disassembled - good tip!

Hi people i need HELP! I had problems with my dealer- i asked for my ipod adapert but they said that they wont sell it to me if i won't have it fitted at their place... i managed to get hold of the ipod adapter from somwhere else and fitted it my self... AS it requires coding i had to take it to my local dealer... they where very polite (but obviously not happy that they couldnt get the money from me for the fitting)

I know coding is a simple process and doesn't require 3 hours labour!!
that what they charged me for claming that they had to "initialize" tyre pressure, electrical windows, steering angle etc. I think that they simply CHEATED ME and thet the work that they carrid out was not necessary! they charged me £210 which is crazy!

Also i have recently done a full service at another dealer and the car was showing 27000km to another service, after they have tapered with the car software, now it show 7000km which is crazy as well, i think they changed it on propose hoping that i will not notice and will rip me of during the another service (that obviously is not required this soon!)

i want to write a formal complaint about this behavior to BMW customer service. And i decided to have them on and proved that they stole money form me and tried to setal some more by making me have a service sooner than required. in order to do this COULD I KINDLY ASK ANYONE TO SENT ME THEIR INVOICE SHOWING THAT THE CODING WAS DONE WITHIN AN HOUR PLEASE????

please get in touch with me other e90 bimmer owners as i need your help on this
my email ems23@bath.ac.uk

HELP MUCH APPRICIETED
THANKS ERYK

on the subject of dash trim removal:
I saw another poster start on the left side near the start button.
I wish I had done that.

The right side pin socket has a metal friction socket that grips *hard*.
The end result for me was breaking the plastic tab on the trim piece that holds the pin and now I have to try epoxy to glue the plastic back together or buy a new trim piece.

The "I Stage" or "I Level" programming is required prior to installing the adapter. It might be possible to do this programming after installation...but I honestly don't know. Either way, it's required. Here's what I did:

The programming is done via a MOST port next to the OBDII programming port under the driver's side dash. The plug (when the car isn't being programmed) is plugged into a "reflector bridge" that completes the MOST bus loop. I took this reflector (actually stole one off of an E90), and essentially took the MOST plug out of the iPod adapter, and plugged it into the reflector, essentially bypassing the whole iPod adapter on the MOST bus. I then dropped my car off at the dealer with the reflector installed on the adapter plug, and the glove compartment removed. This allowed them to program the car with the latest "I Stage" or "I Level" (they refer to it as either...my money is that your SA won't know what you're talking about when you mention it anyway) with the adapter "not installed" (bypassed, really), then simply remove the reflector, and plug the adapter back in for the rest of the flash.
Hi!
thank you for your DIY guide...
I got interface and instructions for my z4 from my dealer, at last(actually I had to fight to get instructions, but nothing wrong when I opurchased retrofit with the money in my hands....)....
the connector bridge you are talking about....I have it and I had to bought it separately with a optic fiber twin cable...but I don t' undestrand where I have to plug it for stage 1 coding(dealer told me it's not necessary on a 6 months old z4....anyway he told me it's just a update you can do after the retrofit....) as I can't see that in your pictures...
instructions don't mention this bridge....
my car has simply professional radio and 11 speaker system with an amp. no idrive nor cd charger nor cd charger preparation....can you help me about that bridge please?
thank you in advance, so much!
