8" snow tires on 8.5" rims
Hello all!
I recently purchased 4 of the blizzak LM-25's for my 07' 335i coupe with the 18" sport rims. I purchased from Gary (Great job! Got the tires the next day) and he informed me that there would be no problem putting 8" tires on the rear stock sport rims that are 8.5" wide. I fully believe Gary with this but when I take these to the dealer to have them put on I want to be 100% sure. (My dealer is not happy about me not buying tires from them and I don't want them telling me that they can't do it, or that they won't fit.) Anyone else here have the same setup? Were there any issues with the install or any problems with the ride quality/safety? If the dealer starts hassling me I want to be able to tell them that I know this setup will work. Also, my dealer wants $50 per wheel to mount and balance them. It that a crazy price? If I wanted to forget going to the dealer and have them mounted and balanced at a tire store (STS for example) is this something they can do OK? Will I have to change anything with the tire pressure monitor with this new setup? My dealer told me that if I want the new tires covered under the wheel protection package I got from the dealer I must have them mounted by a BMW dealer. Is that true? Thx! |

DO NOT take them to your dealer!
Take it to Discount Tire or one of the well know tire co. and have them do it. From the sound of things they will tell you it won't work but most importantly $50 a tire is A JOKE. You should be able to get ALL of them mounted and free balance/rotation FOR LIFE for that price.... 8" should be fine for the tire but what is the profile? That will be what lets it widen out easier for a wider wheel. For ex: 225/55 -vs- 225/35 which won't have as much flex.

They are 225/40VR-18 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 XL. Same exact size as what comes on the car with the sport package. I assume that they will stretch OK based on what Gary sold me.
Does the tire place need any special tools to get the runflats that are on there off corectly? What should I ask when I go to another tire place? |

NO....the RFT's are easy and just like any other tire. The side wall is a hair stiffer but ANY tire shop with a clue won't have a problem.
You shouldn't have to ask them anything. Just tell them you want them mounted and balanced and everything should go smooth. I would go to Discount Tire or a well know co. to get the work done. If they damage a tire/wheel then they have to pay for it....

That would be a little hard to fit around the brakes. |

http://www.bridgestonetire.com/tires...productid=1096 I go to a small, independant tire shop. They charge $7.50 per tire for a balance (maybe a bit extra to mount). Alignments are $49.95. |

Yes 225/40R18 tires will fit on both an 8" and 8.5" wheel. Common way to go for winter tires.

I found another BMW dealer close to me that says they will do the work for $100. HALF as much as my dealer. I called a bunch of tire shops today and most of them don't want to touch the wheels b/c of the run flats. One guy said he's afraid to touch BMW rims due to the high cost to replace them if he screws up.
Thanks for all the info everybody! :rocks: |
