Hardwiring Dash Cam Not Working
Ive been trying all day to hardwire my dash cam and it simply isn't working. Ive tested 2 different power supplies from the rearview mirror and both are at 5v, and the dash cam is supposed to use 5v. When i splice the wires together, i get 5v. When i plug in the camera, the camera comes on, but cannot stay on and turns right back off. What is going wrong? Im using the same exact cable i had when it was plugged into USB.

Straight hardwire. as a test, when i connect it to the USB original connection i tested it to still run at 5.04 volts. However after i wire it together up top, the voltage is sill at 5.04, but when i plug in the dash cam it drops to 4.5 volts. what's going on? its a garmin dash cam 20. its very small

My dash cam power supplies take 12 volts input and outputs 5 volts USB.

I think im going to do a homelink fuse tap and put a dual usb up top for both a dash cam and detector. the current from the existing 5v simply isn't enough. I also don't want to overload the existing 12v up top and cause issues. i think ill create a video later

Ended up using a tap on fuse 7 and ran a 12 volt up to the headliner, attaching it to a dual port USB charger. My spin on the hardwiring solution. By request i can post every detail.

I think only the fuse tapping works on the E90. Which is good because you can enabled a park mode if tap an alway hot fuse.
Or you get a plug and play kit like this which taps into a dome lighting source :

Fuse tapping works on many different types of vehicles. Its not something BMW alone does. Anyone can consult their vehicles fuse diagram and wire up anything they want. As far as "only e90" is concerned, I tapped fuse 7 with an E92. i could've tapped fuse 8 or fuse 63 as well, or pulled apart the 12v in the passenger footwell. there are many options.

I did a DIY on this for my E90, however my post might be quite well hidden as I’m quite new here (or it’s in the wrong place). Either way please see the link, I have photos for the fuse locations I used which should work on all BMWs, in theory...
