Anyone else thouroughly dislike electronic steering on their E9X?
Having owned my E92 for just over 6 months now I can help but deeply miss the hydraulic steering found on my old E46 and an old Leon FR previously owned
I find that this electronic steering stuff is so void of feedback and feel it's so disapointing... Is it just me in this boat or are others feeling the same? |

I've just changed my e90 for an F10 and the e90 steering was great, good feel and not too light whereas the one big complaint I have about the F10 is the steering, it's electric and far too light and soulless. |

F series cars use electronic steering the E9x cars all used hydraulic steering. I had a E90 328 and now I have a LCI E92 335 and they both use the same hydraulic steering system.

Haven't experienced the F10 myself but have driven the new 118d with electronic steering and found it to be the same with what felt like a massive 'dead spot' in the centre when passing from turning left to right or vice versa

In the US all E9x cars came with hydraulic steering.. I know in Europe you get all sorts of options we don't get here so there is a possibility that you do have an electronic steering system..

Maybe it was an option?
Active steering - S217A? Stick your VIN in here. http://www.bmwarchive.org/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html |

I've had a look and I definitely don't have the active steering option, however the rack I have is what realoem classes as electronic steering, you can see the motor here;

If this can be retrofitted into other E90 models, turbo upgrades for the 335i guys just got a whole lot more interesting! WM |

Well if I am an odd one out its awful, I haven't driven any other E92 so can't really say as to a 'general' steering feel but mine is so light compared to what I did have in the old E46, it's not light enough for there to be something wrong (I don't think!) but it's nowhere near what I would like!

My 2010 e90 320d was definitely hydraulic - when I bought it I remember being quite surprised how much heavier the steering was compared to my previous Vx Vectra and I certainly miss that weight in the F10, and I certainly agree about the centre 'dead spot'.

REALOEM shows you are not the odd one out...
I guess BMW put them in some random models to try it out before the full implement on the next gen machine. Rather soul destroyingly, I can't find it fitted to a single N54 or N55 derivative though.. WM |
