Are you saying he got the fix-it ticket for the front plate and NOT the speeding ticket?

I put the plate on.
Actually, I bought the car here in NY and the dealership automatically put the plate on for me. No problems. Then again, I'm not anal about such things.

I got my care from two previous owners with states that dont require two plates. I'm keeping the tradition. The car isn't meant to have a plate on it. Don't do it, Later I caved in . So I took a picture of a plate, made a digital print and applied it to the bumper. Great fake... Then I got tired of it. I peeled it off and it ripped all the paint off with it. Who's the fool now.. Good excuse to paint the whole bumper, it's full of chips

I believe most of us that tune are right there with you ....
In most states, displaying your front plate is a secondary violation and not a primary which is why in most cases, you wont be questioned or bothered unless your already being stopped for something else like...speeding.... If and when you get stopped, be nice and play ignorance or the good ole, "there is no bracket for a tag on this bumper so i special ordered one"! That will usually work if its a larger area but if your in a smaller town/city then most likely same cop has seen you around before... If you do get a "fix-it" ticket then your road to freedom is easy... Simply: 1: Except your summons gracefully then head home 2: Throw some double sided tape on your tag, stick it on your bumper 3: Snap some photos of your car with tag mounted via double sided tape 4: Mail summons, photos and explanation of how you complied with law to clerks office of XYZ jurisdiction 5: Charge will be drooped since you complied with law in timely fashion (before court date) and you saved your 25 dollar fine plus your state court cost/fees and a few hours off work.. 6: Remove the tag and enjoy running around tag-less

I side-mounted mine, in DC I wouldn't be worried as the police there have pressing crime-related issues to deal with, in MD I'd feel OK, But in VA forget about it, it's probably the most penal state in the union when it comes to automobile violations. They don't mess around with anything, I make sure the car and my driving are on the straight and narrow when i'm over in that part of the DMV. It's just not the state you want to get pulled over in, they'll happily destroy your day.

When i lived in California I just took a ticket every few years. When I had to put a plate on to get the ticket cleared I used double sided tape to hold the bracket on. In fact if you pick up your BMW from the factory on Euro delivery they attach the plate directly to the car with double sided tape.

I ziptied my front plate to my passenger side sunvisor. When I'm out and about I flip it down. When I don't want a front plate, I fold it up. Everybody wins.
You can kinda see it here: |

When I was in Atlanta I took off my front plate in my 7 series and surprisingly found someone to do my tints there for 50.00 so I got 5% tints. Not used to the southern heat. I ended up selling the car there for a heck for a lot more than I paid for it.

I just don't run any front plates.
In my old car, I got pulled over for it -- cop thought I was drunk because he saw me pull out of a bar and he thought he'd flag me with the no front plates and attach a DUI to it too...but nope, didn't have a thing to drink that night. So just keep in mind that having no front plates (or tinted front windows) is another excuse for a cop to pull you over. Just don't drive like a d-bag and you should be good 95% of the time. |
