E92 Xenon headlight autoadjust failure - fix/guide

Hi all,

Only had my car a few weeks but noticed at night the passenger side headlight would point down rather than up, took it to a specialist yesterday who said I need a new headlight as the whole unit was broken.

Not to be scared by this today I set about investigating, only to find it was a simple piece of plastic that had popped out of a retainer! Iam not kidding this took me less than 35 mins to fix, you do need to take the wheel off though and trust me Iam no mechanic.

Hope these pics will help someone else as I spent a few hours Googling this prob but didn't find any exact results... I assume the drivers side could apply to this fix too and also to HID's with the auto level adjuster.

For anyone with this prob it's worth checking as a new headlight is £200 a pair for Xenon's I gather these lights can easily "pop" out if you bounce over a pot hole of get a slight knock to the front of your car

First up remove the inner wheel liner, just the section behind the front bumper
I think there are 9 or 10 nut here to remove

Next up is to remove the back plate of the light/projector for your dipped beams just 4 screws here (sorry this one was blurry)

This reveals the unit, you don't have to do anything to this

You are now looking directly behind the unit, on the passenger side headlight this clip is on your left hand side as looking, you can get your hands in there all you need to do is wiggle it about so it pops right back in, - job done

re-assemble in reverse order, go get cup of tea.

Good man!

I need to do this as my plastic retainer thing has popped off the passenger headlight - great timing!

I had mine replaced under warranty £1300 because they had to change the light and the box that controls things ouch!
