i went to the shop and i started the car with the s.a .so he was able to hear the noise then. he told me it might be the lifters.
he will call me to morrow to let me know what they are going to do about it.

When I get my car back tomorrow, I'll let you know how it sounds. Hopefully, no more ticking sound!
So I picked up my car tonight from the dealer. They replace my head cylinder. It took them 4 days but I finally have my car back. Let me tell you, there is no rattling at all. Sounds and feels like a new car but it's only my first drive. I don't want to get my hopes up too high but sounds and drives very smooth.

Congrats. You are fixed, no worries..... Go ahead, test it out. Take it to the nearby Starbucks and try the drivethrough line. Drive it like a grandma, not "spirited" for a couple of weeks. It won't tick. You have the revised "Cylinder Head *with valve*" so now it has plenty of oil on cold startups and always will....

So that's the cause of the clicking... Thanks for the advise. I've been speeding everywhere since I picked up the car. Better take it easy. I got a 5 series for a loaner and I will never get a 5 series again. 3 series are so much more fun to drive.

In summary, based on reading all these posts, the top of the engine occasionally doesn't get enough oil on cold starts causing the ticking. You have just gotten the most effective fix for yours -- head replacement ***with a revised valve***. If you read all the posts above, there are a few folks who didn't have success (possibly because BMW had not yet developed the new valve design)with the cylinder head replacement but 99% of them did indeed have success, including me. I was in your boat too nearly a year ago with my car. It's been tick-free since...and I drive it short distances and relatively easy. Enjoy your car!

^ so even if I dont have the crazy loud tick where one is louder than the rest, do you think I should fight my stealership to replace head? I have CPO warranty, but with a SIB out that should not matter right?

I just am scared of some hack working on my cars engine...

Hey again MrDummy:

If they do the head replacement, they won't hack your engine. It's an easy swap from what I hear...not really invasive because you're basically getting the entire top half of the engine replaced.... I know why you're on the fence, though.... If I was in your shoes, I'd have them check it out once or twice before the warranty is up. Then again, if you don't have that "crazy loud tick" then yours is probably normal. You know what I'm talking about...you've seen the comparison videos. But put your mind at ease by inquiring with the dealer...let them know you know about the issue.

^^ thanks you have been a true friend on the boards here. I just keep hearing a loud ticking on the drivers side lower area with hood closed and car in park, even now that it warmed up, weather wise, it still does it. I dont think its the TICK TICK issue, but it just sounds OFF to me.

I guess I will mention it again when I go in for an oil change whenever that is?

My car ticked the loudest in reverse backing out of the garage. I don't think weather had anything to do with it, but I suspect maybe having the engine full of oil, instead of being a quart low or whatever may have something to do with the noise going away and being there. If it's low I feel it's more prone to tick.

But if you live close enough to your dealer just take your car in and ask them to take a look at it, along with your starter. Hope that helps a little!

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE

Replacing the HVAs will NOT fix the problem! Do NOT accept the revised HVAs as a fix!

I had mine done a few months ago, and the noise has returned. I am now awaiting approval from BMW UK for an entire cylinder head.

I had my valve lifters replaced and the ticking was gone for about 6 months....the ticking now only occurs on a cold start, sometimes. It goes away after about 15 mins of light driving.

im new to this thread so bear with me....

I have a 2007 335 coupe....At idle I hear a ticking noise coming directly from the engine....ive heard it on others so im not sure how normal it is....although it makes my engine sound more like a diesel....

When im driving its smooth, however, when i return to idle, the ticking is back...Is there a specific SIB for this ? Or any other advice to tell the dealer?

I understand what you are saying. Do u still hear the ticking after driving for lets say 30mins? Or do you hear it at cold start. My ticking comes up after 3 to mins of cold start and stays on for 10 to 15 minutes and then disappears.

I dont think there is an SIB number for 335i's. I took mine to the dealer and they said its normal. The SIB listed here is NOT for N54 engines which we have.

I wonder if its a bearing ....just because the noise comes from the right rear wheel and seems to come only when turning left at parking lot speeds...

what do you guys think?

this is what the did to my car:

repl. exhaust valve lifters
99 sublet lic# 0
wp40
1 11-12-7-581-215 profile gasket: 118522
1 11-12-0-409--288 set of alu. screws f
cylinde;11109510
2 11-36-7-524-954 collar screw: 113095
12 11-33-7-605-330 hydr. valve pushrod:113065

21974 lifters ran engine, verified ticking noise. as per sib 11 09 07 , noise is due to lifters , and they must be replaced. R/R valve cover , vammos unit , and exhaust cam with bearing ledges . replaced lifters , set timing , reassembled , cleared fault memory , roadtested ok

this is what is on the invoice.

do you guys think this will solve the problem???
