RRT/getBMWparts.com Koni Challenge ST 328i Build Thread

Hey guys, wanted to get this up right away so folks can follow our progress as we build our new race car for the 2009 season.

We're making the move to Grand Am's Koni Challenge series this year in the ST class. Don't worry - you'll still see us at the usual BMWCCA and NASA events too. These are the first pics of our brand new 2009 328i sedan, purchased from our partner Tischer BMW just a few weeks ago. I want to thank Evan and Jason for helping us out once again - we look forward to our continued partnership with Tischer and getBMWparts.com

Fresh from the showroom floor

Started the stripping process this past weekend - it was strange destroying a brand new car with 295 break in miles on it :eeps:

And what the car should look like when we're done :woot:

Tentative plans include the Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, NJMP and VIR rounds, with regular drivers Barry Battle and Michael Dayton behind the wheel.

Stay tuned for weekly updates on our build progress impin:

As a 328i owner, I'll be following your progress very closely to get a feel for how durable the car is under 'stressful' conditions. Out of curiosity, why did you go with the 328 instead of the 335. I'm glad you did, but I thought the turbo cars were the 'it' thing for modification/competition right now

The class we will be running in (st) allows the 328's and a very stringent rule set. There are other classes in Koni challenge that allow different cars and applications.

We will be running some bmw cca events as well this spring with the car so it should be a lot of fun.

Very nice! Are you planning any oil system modifications (if those are legal) and if so what?

Update:

Its REALLY stripped down now. Welding for the cage has begun, and we hope to have it wrapped up ASAP because it goes to the painter Friday.

Roof is off to make it easier to work in the car, and its being replaced with the non-sunroof counter part. Thanks again to Evan and Jason for getting us that roof skin in a hurry.

We've got our 330 brakes and swapped over to 17" trailer wheels for the time being to accommodate them.

Unfortunately we have to wait a little while to get our hands on our sets of Koni shocks as they are hand built per order by one person. The good news is that once we get them we'll be able to work on them on our own thanks to our in-house shock rebuilding services and test equipment .

The car will have its first shake-down on AST's at VIR with NASA towards the end of this month, with skid pad testing to follow a short while after that

Check out some new pics...and notice the new red lift this car has all to itself

Good stuff!

What's the process involve in converting a sunroofed car to non sunroof car. How much $$ are we talking about?

not too bad. You'd have to remove the headliner to get to the sunroof. then you can remove the whole cassette and get a new roof panel.

you can get the panel from getbmwparts.com for $618.96 and would probably want to pay a shop to do the install

Very cool, one question though.. why start with a brand new car and then strip it like that? Why not a used one?

Is the carbon fiber roof from the M3 coupe a completely different shape or would it fit?

we looked at a used car though would want to replace alot of things and would end up costing just as much as what we got the new car for.

do you have a coupe or sedan? if you have a coupe its just a matter of pulling your old roof and putting the CF one on

Just a quick update on the car:

The cage is still being made. Ran out of piping yesterday and while waiting on more have been starting the wiring of the car. Instead of rushing to get the car ready for VIR next weekend we've decided to take one of the e36's instead.

Awesome work!

I am kind of a n00b at the racing world, so here is my noob question:
Why go with the 328i instead of the 335i (or the M3)? Lack of reliability? Too much weight? Too much power bumping it into a more competitive class? No FI cars allowed?

Thanks

What are you guys going to be doing with the roof? I'm assuming that you're going to get rid of the sunroof, but are you going with a steel roof or CF?
