Need advice! ( friend dented my bumper )

Ok so a friend of mine backed out of his garage... DIRECTLY into my rear bumper. As a result i have a minor dent and paint chip to the corner of my rear bumper. (will post pics soon)

I had my car quoted at several auto body shops, both BMW certified and regular auto body. They all agree that i need a new bumper and the cheapest quote i received was roughly 1200$.

Now question to you guys is..

A) Should i go through with the BMW certified fix at 1200$?
B) Buy a bumper online and have it painted professionally?

- if you chose B) do you know of any good RELIABLE sources to get quality bumpers from.

Thanks for any input

EDIT:

QUICK QUESTION ABOUT INSURANCE AND WHERE THEY SHIP CHECK TO ON 2nd PAGE!!! PLEASE HELP! THANKS

Have your friend buy you a new m-tech rear bumper and have it professionally painted. You can Google a retailer. It should be less than $1200 all said and done.

Thanks for your input guys. I was actually leaning towards buying a new style bumper all together. As for the styles available, i am kind of hesitant as to going for M-tech. How would the M3 style rear look?

something sort of like this:

I only mention the M3 rear because it appears to blend well with the space grey color of my car.

if hes really a friend id find a used bumper the same color in mint condition and buy that for around 300$. he can pay. insurance is no fun. ive swapped both my front and rear bumpers for under 500$ total and they were both mint condition, oem paint. check the forums.

Show him the estimate and have him give you the money, an mtech bumper will run right about $400 and paint and installation should not be more then $500.

You will have an upgraded rear and all will be good in the world

HAHAH. Yes he is paying for it so that isn't the problem. I guess i'll go either the M-tech or M3 rear route. Decisions

Was in the exact same situation and decided to go with BMW

But depends entirely on the damage and budget

BMW will replace the whole part it will be very convenient but they will certainly pull you're pants down doing it

I was looking through their quote and some of the costs are bizarre. Sure ill have some peace of mind knowing it was done by a certified auto body, i can't justify handing over 1200$ for something so minuscule. My only worry is color matching with the paints really.

Exactly that's was my worry of an absolote colour match .... Iv heard of horror stories where people have given their car to the wrong body shop and it ended up in a disaster

Some of the stuff the dealership charge you for us unreal

But plus side its given to those people who made the car and if you have any problems you have 3 years to get it done again of its dodgy

They charged me to reset my sensors but I guess it's that feeling of relief knowing its in good hands

Although some dealerships are idiots but majority of them are good

It really depends on the bumpers current condition. I had a similar incident spot repaired for $150. They didn't have to paint the entire bumper, just the smaller area and blend.

Are you claiming this against your friends insurance or is he paying out of pocket?

If the insurance company is paying for it you might as well go all in but if your friend is paying out of pocket (and assuming he's a GOOD friend) than maybe you shouldn't squeeze so hard lol

First, make up your mind about what bumper you want on the car.

Second, have an open discussion with your friend, who, being a friend, has already told you he'll cover the cost of the damage. During the discussion, explain that you don't want more from him than you are appropriately due, but that you are willing to try to save him/the insurer some money by buying a bumper online so long as it's an authentic BMW bumper. Ask your friend to discuss that with his insurer to make sure there's no complications and if there are going to be any, work with him/them to get them settled before the repair work begins.

FWIW, to insurance companies, a claim is a claim, and it's impact on your friend will depend on his track record with them more than anything else. So, if your friend files a claim with his insurer to handle the repair, I doubt it'll make any difference at all whether you find a less expensive mode to buy the bumper. Moreover, I suspect you won't be able to buy one more cheaply than the body shop can since they purchase at wholesale prices. If you are going to try to save your friend some money, you may want to try to negotiate the cost of the repair work with them, provided your pal is paying out of pocket.

All the best and I hope you get a speedy and tidy resolution to the issue.
