It appears all of those e-mails to DINAN paid off! See below e-mail from DINAN. No details on power gains, pricing, or when it will hit the market, but there is rumor it should be out in the next few months. Good news for those concerned about their warranty or that don't care to risk their engine, fuel pump, etc running a piggyback.

This is good news indeed. A tune from Dinan is sure to be more expensive than something like the JBD, but should allow you to keep your warranty.

Your BMW dealer and if the dealer doesn't cover it because they believe the problem is a result of the tune, then DINAN will cover the costs. More info on the DINAN warranty can be found on their website.

Chris, how is your car running? I spoke with one of the DINAN reps at Bimmerfest and he couldn't give me a date for a Diesel ECU flash. He said they were aware of the demand but they are so busy with other projects. He had nothing good to say about the JBD. He said it was junk and that you could buy a resister at Radio shack that would do the same thing. He went on about how it was just tricking the motor into thinking it needed more fuel etc.??? He still didn't change my mind, I may just have to get a JBD?

As for the JBD, most of us running the JBD know what it is and how it works. Yes it's a resistor which tricks the ECU into delivering more fuel, which is a method common for diesel piggybacks. Is it the best way do go about making more power, absolutely not. An ecu reflash would be the best way whereby the ECU would be preprogrammed to tell the fuel pump when to deliver more fuel as well as adjust for injection timing and boost. That said, it is a rather benign way to get more power IMO, esp if run at the default setting.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of options out there for us US diesel guys, as I am sure you know. There are a couple of shops that offer a "resident" flash tune, but the warranty risks running a tune that cannot be reversed are to great. What is great about the JBD (aside from the increase in power) is that it is easy to install and uninstall leaving virtually no trace that it was installed, that coupled with the fact it is relatively cheap.

I am anxious to see what Dinan comes out with and what kind of power gains we could expect to see. I suspect the gains will be conservative and more in line with the JBD default setting and VAC module, but it will cost 4 or 5 times as much. Rumor has it, they will come out with the tune prior to the end of the year. I have also sent ESS tuning a couple of e-mails and they said they may also consider working on a flash tune via a handheld programmer if there is enough interest. The first company that comes out with a flash tune via a handheld programmer will get my business.

Is the JBD really just a resistor network? There is more in the box than just a resistor and pot. Unless the PIC is just for show then there is more going on in there. I guess a couple seconds of pocking around in there with a DMM should provide the answer.

Yes, it functions by tricking the ECU into thinking that not enough fuel is being delivered, as a result the ECU sends a signal to the fuel pump to pump more fuel, thus the fuel pump increases pressure to pump more diesel. Increasing fuel delivery is how diesels make extra power. There are a couple of ways to go about doing this; 1) by increasing injection timing (ECU flash) or 2) by increasing fuel pressure (piggybacks).

The JBD uses a 18F23K22 (8-bit) processor. Good luck tuning the D with resistors as it requires many non-linear functions. Tuning the diesel
isn't rocket science though and the overall function is much simpler than say the JB4 piggyback used to tune the N54 turbo motors. But the results speak for themselves and it's hard to beat the value. Diesels running full (and much more expensive) DME flashes which are verypopular in Europe are not running substantially faster than the JBD and in some cases slower.

I am reading that BMW is not sending over a F30 Diesel to the U.S. I hear they are keeping the X5d and possibly bringing over the X3d and 7 series d. Sounds like the 2011 335d may be the last of its kind for awhile. Not sure if that' good or bad news for us 335d owners. It also means that aftermarket tuners probably aren't to exited to spend a lot of time and money in R&D for this motor. I think these car may increase in value and due to their limited production. Lets hope so because I may have this car for along time. I see 10X more M3's on the road than 335d's and I like that!

I really disliked the look of the deflectors, so I passed...I also prefer the matte black over the glossy (my grilles are matte black, too). Obviously my preference, and wouldn't knock someone else for theirs, as long as it's tasteful.

My car has the gloss black trim so, I think the gloss black badging will go well.

Reviving an old thread. Was searching the forums and saw this, so I called dinan and talked To a rep, who was towing the line about "we can't release any info on things we are working on". What's the consensus? Thinking its just a pipe dream because iftheyhavent come up with anything yet, then why would they now?

Chris this is great news I once inquired about this to DINAN and they had told me that they were not in the making of it, good thing is warranty wont be void but EXPECT to pay prices a la RENNtech or more. I gather DINAN is getting ready for the INFLUX of new DIESELS in the BMW stables and hopefuly those who still have the 335d's can reap benefits for it.
