Bosch vs NGK
Obviously NGK is the OEM spark plug supplier for our cars. Bosch spark plugs are offered as alternatives. But why are they listed under the same part # ?
http://www.koperformance.com/part-nu...02%20158%20253 Do you guys know if a local bmw dealer would carry both the Bosch and NGK plugs? How do they know which plugs to order?

Retailers usually list the BMW part number as just a reference, so it can leads back to many different OEM and aftermarket choices. Rarely will the sell the OE part which is attached to the part number. That's usually just dealers or if you specifically ask for the OE part.
This spark plug (253) does not have a brand name attached to it in the ETK, so you could probably get either brand if purchased at the dealer. EDIT: When I plug that part # into Tischer it lists each application line-by-line. They include both NGK and Bosch in there. My guess is it would be a crap-shoot. If you really want NGK, AutohausAZ has them for $14.17 each. Last edited by CirrusSR22; 04-20-2011 at 06:49 PM.. |

I get 20% discount at my local bmw dealer...When I called and asked them the price they told me 18.10$, however they didn't specify which brand.

One of my other favorite places for OE (in a BMW box) parts is Husker BMW, a BMW dealer in Omaha. They have that part number for $13.79 each, but no free shipping. Maybe someone would be nice enough to open a box and see what brand plugs they are?

I have run both and the NGK ran better. Smoother and better MPG. My car came with NGK went to Bosch at 50k miles and back to NGK at 100k miles.

My dealer put all new plugs in at 90K miles. Today I was changing the oxygen sensors myself and decided to pull the plugs and look at them. My 2006 330xi has 127K miles on it. All the plugs looked fine, nice grey color but they were a mix between NGK and Bosch plugs. There were four BOSCH BMW logo and 2 NGK BMW logo. NGK PLZFR6A11S and BOSCH FR7NPP332. There is only one BMW part number that could be either NGK or BOSCH, so does that mean dealer inventory is a mix between the two brands? I just find it odd they would mix them like that. My car runs great and I'll probably replace them all at 140K miles as preventative maintenance.

The NGK's are $9.68/ea
The Bosch's are $7.53/ea RockAuto has a constant 5% discount code to enter when filling your basket. So the total for NGK's shipped to 49090 is $58 and the total for Bosch's is $49 I would be inclined to go with the Bosch plugs because of the price. I doubt there really is any difference in performance between the two. So I doubt you'll ever get your $95 asking price. |
