Fuel Pump #2 going again....

I've had the new pump for 1k miles, starting to experience the long crank at start symptoms yet again. If this continues, I am going to have the car bought back. Sad.

Off topic - avg 24mpg on Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz.

My car has been doing the exact same thing for the last 5-6 days with much longer cranks in the morning. Im sure it will do the same thing tomorrow. Im really afraid that its going to happen at the more inconvienient time or worse yet happen at a time that when it is the most dangerous like driving on the highway. I dont trust this car and thats sad to say for car of this price point.

I had original replaced back in April? Took them almost 4 weeks. I had about 4500 on the odo and now I am nearing 9000.

I think mine is a October '06 build since I picked it up Nov 8th.

Anyone else having their second fuel pump go on them?

My car is getting some long cranks too. Embarassingly long cranks. Is that a tell-tale sign of the fuel pump(s) failing?

Yup. When my original fuel pump went out I just heard a loud bang and then the car went into "limp" mode. I hadnt experienced any long cranks prior to that moment... by the time I got the car back home I couldnt even start it at all. This time its at least giving me warning signs.

Does anyone know if they've fixed the issue in the 2008 335i? Mine is on order and I'm a bit wary of the issue at this point.

On a related note -- if this isn't fixed, I'm not throwing away a 335i. What are the options here? Are there reputable aftermarket pumps that anyone can recommend?

I had long cranks in the morniong after heat-soak when using Shell 91 Octane. I switched to Chevron 91 and the long crank times went away. I went back to Shell and it came back again! Now I am only using Chevron and have not had one long crank for over one month. The Shell station had a sign posted on the pump stating that the gas may have up to 10% ethanol. There are no ethanol signs on the Chevron pumps. Go figure!?

I use 89 octane Mobil, primarily. I'm going to switch to Chevron 89 and see how things go. I usually top off my tank at the 3/4 tank mark every 2-3 days when I'm not putting much millage on the car.

No wonder your fuel pump is failing your using 89 octane on a 91 min octane car.

I wouldn't use less than 93 octane here in Texas.

fuel pump failure would have nothing to do with octane. However if the gas contains more alcohol than its supposed to, then thats another story. Never use anything less than 91 in a turbo car for detonation reasons.

damn sometimes i use shell just b/c i dont like driving extra for a chevron, I have 10,k on it, a month after i bough the car I had long cranks, but the fuel pump never died, i picked up the car early nov 06, either im lucky or I did something right w/o even knowing.

I'm also a happy Procede owner and loving it!!

SHELL or TEXACO 93 only for me here in Dallas.
10/06 build 11,000 miles no issue.

Sorry, it's not about the brand that you use.
I bet you, you'll notice a big different after you switch back to 91.

Yep, using fuel with high ethanol content will take it's toll on fuel system components very quickly. I've heard some off the record talk that the high ethanol content in the US fuels has been the major factor in the fuel pump problems.

I've seen some non 335 cars come into the shop with in tank fuel pumps that look like they've been sitting out in the rain for 5 years. The ethanol test showed about 20 percent ethanol in the fuel.

Use top tier fuel guys, it will go along ways toward keeping the fuel pumps alive.

Unfortunately, with global warming, carbon footprint etc, Ethanol is here to stay

Not to highjack the thread, but decomposing corn stalk emits Methane which is more harmful than CO2, not to mention converting corn sugar to Ethanol involve cooking which uses energy and emits CO2 as well. Yeah, this thing is political.

In any rate, BMW has to come up with better fuel pump that can handle Etahnol, again assuming Ethanol is the culprit.

Now, I am afraid filling up my car during winter. I believe gas co. mandated to add Ethanol during winter, here in my state of WA up to 10%.
