DSC issues and MOT?

Ahoy.

A mate of mine has a 1 series and the DSC light is now permanently on.

Could be the expensive pump, which would be horrible for him - or something less severe.

MOT is due.

Question is, do stability systems fall under the same rules as say ABS?

Obviously they aren't mandatory on the car: But is it a case of, if the car has it - it has to work? Or will he get through the MOT OK and then get it sorted at his own leasure?

I am not sure what the regs are here. Any ideas folks?

Thankies.
Dave

Is there a warning light on the dash?

Edit: just reread the post - light constantly on.

I think the new rules state that any warning lights that are on when the car is MOT'd would be a failure.

I fear the same thing Ian. Do we know for sure that it's in force now?

Cheers

Just make sure he knows that the pump can be repaired for a few hundred notes, as opposed to replaced completely for over £1k!

From the AA website:

If you've been happily ignoring a warning light because it's not checked in the MOT you could soon be facing an MOT failure and an expensive repair bill because of changes to the test.

From 1 January 2012, the Department for Transport added several new mandatory test items to the annual MOT to comply with a revised European testing directive.

There are ongoing discussions about the changes, but I'm fairly certain that visible warning lights that remain on when the engine is running, would be a failure.

I think as yet it is limited to airbags and emissions lights, as these are compulsory items on all cars.

Not sure about ABS/DSC...

Other dashboard warning lights

For cars fitted with ESC (electronic stability control) the warning light should come on and then extinguish after a few seconds. If it stays on to warn of a fault, the car will fail. This also applies to warning lights for cars fitted with electric power steering, brake fluid warning lights, tyre pressure monitors, air bags lights and seat belt pre-tensioner warnings.

http://www.motchecklist.co.uk/mot-2012-changes.html

It's worth a read for others, especially those who've modified their lights in any way.

Get him to check the reluctor rings on the drive shaft. My wife's E87 kept having issues with the DSC cutting in all the time and this was the cause of the issue.

As for MOT, will probably be a failure if DSC isn't working correctly.

Cars haven't used bulbs for dashboard displays in years -they're surface-mount LEDs and not really removeable. Aside from which, part of the test is that the warning light comes on and then extinguishes. i.e. you're not just testing the system but the diagnostics around it too.

Dave, Can you not scrub the codes just before MOT and then after it passes, have it properly diagnosed and repaired at a convenient time?
