Base Stereo Setup

Is it true that from 2010 and up the base speakers are now only 6 and 2009 and below it had 10?

I didn't order the HK on my incoming 2011 and now I'm wondering if I should have?

What can 6 stock speakers really do?

If you just ordered then you should get the 10 speaker + amplifier Hi-Fi system. Those of us who have 2010 and early 2011 are the only ones with the 6 speaker no amplifier base stereo.

I'm actually not sure when the cut-off date is for 2011 is. You might actually have the Hi-Fi system.

Besides, the base stereo isn't as horrible as everyone say it is, IMHO. It's OK, and could use some improvements, but it doesn't sound like handheld radio like some will lead to you believe. Of course, it still has no place in a 50K+ car.

It's not the end of the world even if you do have the base system. There are plenty of upgrades you can do to improve your audio.

When you say HI-FI do you mean the HD radio? Or are you talking about HK option for 875?

That chart states the hi fi is NA on 11' models. Guess it's the base for me.

I have only 4 speakers in my '10 coupe. Did upgrade to alpine type s speakers and a 10" type r sub. Sounds really good for me.

Only for earlier 2011 models. They changed it sometime during the model year. But as I said, I don't know the exact cutoff date.

I don't know the specs for the US...

But my 2011 e92 came with a "BMW Professional" deck and 4 of the most unbelievably awful speakers I have ever heard. In all sincerity, the stereo that came stock with a 2007 Toyota Yaris hatchback sound better than what my car came with.

Is the "professional" the base head unit?

My problems are all solved now...6 Focal Speaker (tweeters and door and rear seat), a focal amp, an Gateway iPod controller, and now everything is good good good!

In my view, if you end up with the horrid system, it's a bonus. I've listened to mine and the HK system back to back with the same music and there is truly no comparison. Focal for the win!

Im with you on that one. Basic stereo sounds awful !! It simply cannot handle more complex compossitions. Dont get me wrong, it can reproduce certain frequencies quite well but only as long as the sounds dont come to close in time. I've been planning an upgrade before summer. Was also thinking about Focals + amp but the problem with our setup is the BAD (and I mean baaaaad) signal output from the base unit. Did you invest in a sound processor that would at least partialy cure the signal before going into the amp?

They went back to the Hi Fi minus two tweeters in the rear(in the US) .
But this is still a weak system but it can be modified a lot easier
as it has wiring that goes to the trunk for an amp and the Head Unit
has a flat output and uses low level signals to the amp.

Your MY2011.5 will have an 8-speaker/OEM amp in the trunk HiFi system. It may not be a great sounding system but it is not crapola like the 6-speaker Stereo system from 09/09-08/10.

So after farking over those of us who got a car last year, they've gone back to the Hi-Fi system?

That's infuriating. They should at least offer an upgrade kit for the horrible 6-speaker Stereo system.

You have nothing to worry. 2011 e90s built after Sep 2010 have the 8-speaker Hi-Fi system.

2011.5 means 2011 1/2 (i.e. the 2nd batch of 2011s which have all the goodies), not week 5.
