Question 2008 335d ZF uprated? How do I tell?

Hi guys,

Tried searching but as I'm on my iPhone with no PC at the moment the search function isn't working.

I'm going to see a January 2008 335d and I'm thinking of a remap but I'd like to know when in 2008 the gearboxes were updated to the later ZF system to cope with extra torque.

Can anyone tell me?

I have tried using Realoem.com but I cannot find anything out on there either.

Cheers,

James

Both the 6hp26 and 6hp28 can safely cope with the 700nm of torque a tuned 35d engine produces

Reassuring and to be fair, it not every day that you hear of them going pop.

I could have a word with DMS or another reputable mapped to double check, I guess and then have her mapped ASAP.

Good to know!!

I can't wait and I never thought I'd say that about an auto as I have always hated them, I probably still will but just not as much but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make

I did 21k miles in a year in my old Evo 9 MR FQ 360 running 420/400, if your 335i remapped to around 400/400 the can only feel sorry for you with that mpg as its not far off an Evo and that's certainly one reason to be excited about a 'soot chucker'

No worries buddy, but, if you go on Realoem.com you can find out easily as I saw that code or one similar earlier today.

Yes,both the 330D & 335D share the same gearbox - GA6HP26Z.

The question of a revised gearbox for the 335D has come up before, but as far as I'm aware there were no revisions/or changes to the gearbox, the 335D was still running the same gearbox (as above) it started out with in 2005 up until production ceased.

Oh ok, I have to admit, I struggled to find anything about that was definative.

I'm always careful anyway, there arn't many situations on an everyday drive that require the full performance of the car so I'll just continue to feed the power in nice and gently

14hrs to go until I see my potential new car, I cant wait!!!

Up until production ceased??

You mean 335d production has ceased? Or the gearbox.

There are 62 plate 335ds about...

Hmm?

Sorry Dave, perhaps I should have been clearer and said until the present day.

Mind you I had thought speccing up and buying a new E92 was now not possible, perhaps that's not the case

I enquired about a new E92 335D here in Switzerland, but they sadly have no remaining build slots available. Other variants still available. May just be a Swiss thing, as 335i sales vastly out-number 335D sales here.

Yes,I can remember you saying as such Dave.

Having at look on the UK BMW website,it looks like you can still configure all the differing variants of the E92,so perhaps there are still build slots available over here.

I guess build slots across Europe are allocated by demand, and as you say, diesel cars are not as favoured by the Swiss as they are by the Brits.

My box was fine with a remap all the way upto 65k...?! Mine would have had the earlier box also.

BMW have revised the gearbox about 4 times since it's release in 05.
The first change was in March '07 when BMW changed the comms protocol to Canbus .. not sure what other changes were done after that.

Sadly I have had a gearbox go pop on me @around 95k miles ( remapped) I have the box on my garage floor and have not got the funds to get the box inspected to get full diagnosis ( it's a long story)..

A new box from BMW is circa 10k , a refurb'd box from BMW is 5k and an indie will refurbish your box for around 3k

If you have a post 09/2008 build car then you have the latest revision of gearbox ..

Looks like I might have got things wrong then Tom.

Although I can't see any reference to a 6GH28 gearbox on RealOEM, even on a LCI,it still lists the GA6HP26Z

I thnk Real OEM isn't 100% upto date Ian, as I searched though the listings for various different chassis' models and year variants and it only listed the origional number 6hp26.

But, one or two of my fried a work for two different dealerships, and apparently the 6hp28 on the dealers parts listing was related to the 2008 '58 plate 335d coupe

I didn't delve any further into this, but after doing the research I found the PDF with the info from ZF.
On said PDF is lists the parts for both 6hp26 and 6hp28.

I now have a 50/50 - I have a 6hp28 sat in my friends workshop, do I risk fitting it, swapping the torque converter and filling it with oil then see if the mechatroic unit. Will program to my vehicle, or do I sell it and find a 6hp26 low mileage version ...... Hmmmmm
I can't be without my car too long....

Sad to admit it, but the gearbox info makes for interesting reading
