New 08 335i coupe, how should I run the engine first 1K miles.
Hello all, new to the forum. I just got home with my 335i coupe and would like to get your input on the treatment of the engine (RPM's, speed etc) for the first 500 to 1K miles to insure best future performance. Thanks |

What forza said, Just vary the RPM's and don't redline it too much for the 1st 500 miles or so...
Congrats on you're new 08 coupe, post up some pics & Welcome to E90POST

After wondering this myself, i pressed the button and read a few posts.
I wish I hadn't. There are so many conflicted views on this subject from following the manual's advice to driving it like you stole it. Personally, I think just taking it easy over the first 500-1000 miles is the best option...maybe with the occasional redline |

from when i picked up my 07 e92 335, i always gave the engine a good work out. i didnt rev above 6000rpm for the first 250 miles, then continued giving her a hard break in until 1200miles, now shes a strong daily driver. 8000 miles in 3 and a half months, not a single problem...oh, and she dynoed at 280whp/290wlbs in humid 95degree august weather.

Floor the accelerator and don't let up until you need gas or the cops pull you over. Worked for me.
J/K. Nothing new will come from this thread. Many conflicting viewpoints; like I say beat it every single day until it asks for more. My personal experience is that my CA told me that the car is broken in already and to have fun. Heck, the test drive had the CA telling me to get on it. I can see why... it made me buy the car. I don't see anything wrong with taking it easy, but you should talk to your dealership, since they will handle your warranty work. Anything they say can be used against them. |

With variances as wide as they are among dynos, you are aware that these numbers are practically meaningless unless you also provide numbers from other stock 335is (w/ same tranny) that ran on the same dyno, and in the same conditions?

Breaking in engines is still required. Break-in oil change as well. It does not hurt and is good for the car, not only for the engine. Breaking in discussions are like religion wars. They never end Even if you think "It's just a lease" ( which is completely wrong in my opinion ), there is nothing wrong breaking in a car properly. - Eugen |

Whatever gives you piece of mind. In my case, varying speed with a few (5-6) occassional visits to the redline.
And of course change the oil after the first 1,250 miles, not 15k like the manual says. |

Drive it like you would if it had 15K miles on it. It's that simple man.

See... no resolution with this thread. Talk to your service department and go with their advice. This forum won't give you an answer.

I wasn't talking about the manual. I am talking about this thread. If all answers were easily dispensed by the manual, and people actually read it, then these threads won't exist. As it stands, there are people that have ignored the manual with regards to break-in and have had no problems. My personal experience tells me that having effectively no special break-in period has allowed ME to enjoy more than 38000 miles in my 6MT 335i coupe.
Period. My answer will always be the same, your answer will always be the same. They are conflicting in that we both have reliable cars. I stated earlier that there is nothing wrong with a proper break-in period. But in the end, this thread, like other break-in threads has wound up being useless. It's length is only increased by people whining. |

Everyone that reads this, remember BMW is not asking you to break-in this engine to save the atmosphere. They clearly believe that breaking in the engine will lead to longer engine life. If they designed the engine, then why wouldn't I listen? I am not an engine engineer and to over-ride their expertise is rediculous IMO. |

I always let then engine warm up to F' 200 before full throttle my car. Rev the engine to 5k then use engine break to drop to 2.5k.
Changed the oil to redline at 1k miles. |

from AMS website, maybe it comes handy.
AMS Engine Break-In Instructions For the first 500 miles we suggest driving at varying engine speeds. Do not get on the highway and set the cruise control for an hour straight. The key to seating the rings is a variety of partial throttle and short bursts of acceleration. After accelerating let off the throttle while still in gear, letting the engine slow the car down. Don’t baby the car but don’t beat the hell out of the car either. A good variety of driving conditions is the best for engine break-in.
