It was a joke.

Modern oil is designed to be able to lubricate the engine when cold. It's not that much of a worry. It will be plenty warm in a few minutes, and completely abusable in 10.

It's not just about oil lubrication. You have to consider clearances. Most engine clearances are closer when cold than when hot. That's why you must to get the engine up to it's normal working temperature before using maximum revs or WOT. When BMW say there's no need to warm the engine before driving off, they didn't say give it gip from the word go.

And don't compare BMW engines with Transit lumps or Astra 1.2s Well maybe you should, and then you'd treat your engine nicely.

Just knew there was another good reason for not buying second-hand.

I'm agreeing with others just a massive over reaction to this, I would not worry at all. As some one said police, ambulances etc all get abuse from cold and survive fairly well.

I don't always let mine get to full temp before I press the throttle down a little further than normal am I worried not at all. Oil is better than it use to be, engines are built better than they use to be.

Also think of it like this, think of a 40ton lorry starts up in a layby at 4:30 in the morning in -2c and it will have to pull its heart out to get that weight moving and upto 56mph they never have any problems. There service interval is 100,000kms on most trucks. So serviced not as often as a car engine.

I would not be worried in the slightest it will make no difference in your ownership.

I think you'll find "the massive over reaction" was, in the most part, tongue in cheek. Hands up anyone that was seriously suggesting that the OPs one of madness has totally knackered his engine

That's excellent news, did you manage to get to the garage on the original engine?

I leave mine running for a few minutes (or more) till I set off.

Surely the oil is all cold overnight, in this weather especially.

That is the worst thing you can do, at least start driving to get it up to temp quicker.

no, but i undertake lots of foreplay and make sure she's properly "warmed up" before canning the shit out of it...very important to make sure the juices are flowing and everything is well lubricated....

I''ve never driven any of MY cars hard when cold but I had a 06 pug work van and I booted that everywhere from cold (amazing how different you treat things when you don't pay for them) and it had done 175k when my company replaced it with no issues. Never let me down.

You can't compare a fucking lorry lump to a BMW Engine.

You really should wait for the oil to get upto temp before going above 3k

Probably best to wait for warm up, however I don't think your going to be causing any serious damage by giving it a bit of a boot from cold

And why can't you compare the two? They are both internal combustion engines with the same amount of basic moving parts! They produce loads of power and lots more torque than a bmw engine! Still requires the engine oil to lubricate and cool the same moving parts as your brilliant bmw engine! Idiot!

don't forget a lot of commercials and even land rovers have engine heaters fitted so the engine is not driven off from cold. something I don't notice with a diesel but do with petrol is that on a very cold day the diesel always seem to run as if they are already warmed up whereas petrol doesn't (perhaps im just bonkers!)

1. go get a big stick
2. go give yourself a good beating with the big stick
3. sell the car fast you have killed it
4. beat yourself with a big stack again
5. like it matters now and then.

If my beemer was that delicate I would trade it in NOW

Don't worry about it, I have thrashed many a company car over the years from Vauxhall, to merc to bmw to VW to audi with diesels, oh I did kill one badly a rover diesel, cooked it right up, yet at 100k a car no real issues to report apart for the rover at 7k.

now back to 1. beat your self with a stick you naughty naughty boy, you know these engines are made of cheese and must not be treated harsh in any way.
