After a cheap reliable car
I have been offered a job in Scotland, and I plan to travel up Monday morning, return Friday evening.
So I need another car. I intend to buy it local and drive it up. Just the once, then it will stay up there and I will fly up and down My budget is around £2500, I want something cheap to run, reliable, less than 5 years old fiesta, corsa, focus, astra, nothing French Are good buys still to be had at auctions? (Last few times I went, people were paying more than private) I have bought quite a bit from them. I usually do the BCA auctions, Blackbushe and Mansfield. Anyone recomend any round the beds bucks and Herts area 50 miles radius |

I'd say E39 5 Series, will be over 5 years old (really what difference does it make?) Very solid car, good for any trips inc. long motorway, town driving etc.

Yeah but thirsty too for a town car up in bonny scotland.
Also expensive to maintain compared to a supermini, he has a monster 335d at home. Only wants a tiddler.

Once the car is up there, i need it twice a week, to get from Edinburgh Airport and drive to Perth 45 miles, then back again on Friday.
There seem to be so many corsa's, but most appear to be pimped. Anyone been to any good auctions lately? Are there still bargains to be had. Don't want to waste half a day, and find I could buy better quietly |

What about a smart car, if you want lots and lots of MPG. Suzuki Swift "Sport"? VW Polo? Mini? Fiesta

Negotiate taxi fares on expenses as part of the package - how long will you be commuting?

I know you don't want french, but I am a big Renault Clio fan, when choosing a car for this type of purpose. They are extremely reliable cars, VERY cheap to maintain and insure, and IMO drive better than a Corsa or Polo, etc..
The missus has had two, a cheap one as a first car and a new (3yr old) one when I first met her. The latter was a 1.2 sport, was impressively spec'd, looked good, was very nippy and did 40mpg all day long. Never went wrong once in 2 yrs (neither did the first 'old' one). My mate also bought a £450 N reg RT for his missus to learn to drive in 4 yrs ago. She kept it and carried on using it to commute to the railway station in daily. Passed every MOT without any work and cost him an exhaust and a battery in 4 yrs. It had done 120,000 miles and he just sold it again on ebay for £350! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2002-Renault-C...1%7C240%3A1318 |

Passed every MOT with no work me thinks your mate knew the MOT Tester I always give my cars a good check over before MOT, take it and you can guarantee you'll be thinking may fail on exhaust, may fail on a bit of corrosion then it fails on both and something you did not budget for!
Or stupid stuff that was perfect until it got into the testing bay! Horn, indicators, seat belts etc. I've had them play up at the test station and work perfectly before and after!

Straight up Nic, it'strue - he is an idiot when it comes to cars and could barely change a light bulb! Every MOT he stated that if it failed and was gonna cost more than £200 he would scrap it. Every single time, it passed with no probs at all. Unbeleivable but true! He works for me and the car was always a bit of a joke at work as he is pretty tight and we took the p!ss for not getting his missus something better - he had the last laugh I suppose - £100 depreciation for 4 yrs motoring!

Very, very lucky, I hate MOTs! Maybe because I seem to pick cars with a never ending amount of problems ...

Update
Just bought the car. After a week of searching, spending hours browsing the web. I found a Ford Fiesta 2004 1.4Tdci. It has 55k miles with full service history, all the receipts and the same owner from new. Picked it up for £2800. I think its a bargain, I did not even try to haggle. The add came out just after 10am, and I was there by lunch time. 2 other people turned up minutes after I arrived. Can't believe tax is only £35 per year, makes up for the crazy tax on my 335 |
