damaged paintwork

Anyone got any idea what could cause this damage?

I picked the car up from the dealers and noticed this, annoyingly I noticed this when I got home and now it's a case of my word against theirs.

As you can imagine I'm quite F**ked off about it.

My guess would be a poor previous repair.

What's confused me is the creases in the paintwork to the right of small cracks to the left of the main bit of damage. Implying that paint was soft when it happened.

Sorry the photo is a bit crap

Have you asked them about this already. You may find that a calm approach indicating that you are sure the damage occurred on their site will elicit an offer of a repair.

Or have they already denied responsibility. Maybe they'll have CCTV to review?

Thats been reversed into a round bollard.
I suspect you'll find a trim clip at the point where the paint has chipped.

I always check round the car when I pick it up before I drive away, that way they cant argue.

my opinion someone has reversed into a wall or its gone through the valet and they have used the jet wash to close to paintwork and blistered off (may have been repaired before badly i.e. smart repair)

Same thing happened to my bro-in-laws car when he took it to the car wash - they got too close with the pressure washer and it took the paint off. Bodyshop reckoned that the bumper had already been repainted but not a great job hence the peeling

OK, I had contacted the dealer and they said the damage was there when they got the car. Although the inspection report they gave me had no mention of damage, which probably would have happened before they washed it.

but it's my word against theirs, so I can't see me getting anywhere.

Escalate it to BMW customer services with a complaint about the dealer if if genuinely was caused by them.

I Would query this if the damage was there how come it was not on the report. Take it from there otherwise escalate to BMW direct. If damage was there it should be on report otherwise they are liable for it, thats what's its there. Same way if you had a curtsey car they would chase you to worlds end for the costs.

As said above. If it is not on the rport then that should be proof enough that it wasn't there when they got the car. Otherwise what is the point of the report?

I did query this, but was fobbed off we don't record small bit of damage on the inspection report.

They were going to check their CCTV to see if it was hit in their car park, but I doubt he'll come back with anything.

I posted a pic up on detailing world, and this seems to be the consensus over there

I'd say that's bull and would def dispute that! How can they make a decision on what's small or large damage - surely that's a matter of opinion and a genuine basis for dispute!

Personally, I wouldent consider that small, especially when ive taken cars to main dealers and theyve recorded car park dings and minor surface marks!

Suggest you pursue this as I would...may the force be with you

small damage if you returned a loaner with that they would hit you for probably around £500 to repair. Considering how most dealers go through their loaners with fine magnifying glass on check out you expect same level on your car. I smell a cover up

What?!?

They are so sure that it was there when you brought it in but will check the CCTV to see if it was hit in the car park.

Well that makes sense doesn't it

Something similar happened to me a few years ago on my E39.

After the dealer washed the car with a pressure washer, some of the paintwork on the door had come off. When I disputed this with the dealer, I got the usual it was there already, etc..and I got them to check the CCTV.

Anyway, after a further few complaints, they agreed to fix it (respray the door). It turned out that there was a very small stone/bubble (I think) in the paintwork, and when the pressure washer had hit it, the stone went under the paintwork and took a section of it with it.

I learnt a valuable lesson that day, which was never let the dealer wash your car.

I hope you get it all sorted and good luck!

OK so I have an update for you.

The service manager admitted that the damage was caused by the guys washing the car, but stressed the damage has only been caused as a result of poor paint job. So is willing to cover half the cost out of goodwill being as I'm a good customer.

not sure I'll be taking my car there anymore.

Was the car AUC and when did you get it. I would stick to guns if it was as things like this should have been picked up in prep
