My first Nurburgring trip

I thought I’d write a short write up of my first trip to the infamous Nurburgring. I went in my 320d Msport Touring and my mate in his R8. Yep a little bit of a difference in motors. We first decided on a hotel and dates according to the Ring calendar. Got quite a bit of advice from Ring vets prior to going so thanks to all for your input.

http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/startseite.html

Eurotunnel crossing

Once we crossed over we followed our sat navs through France, Belgium and into Germany. France was quite a spirited drive. Belgium everyone slowed right down as the penalties are steep and above 160 kph you can get your car impounded! Then as we crossed into Germany the speed just rocketed. Some areas of the autobahn are limited but generally whatever speed goes. It was a lot of fun driving at over 100 pmh most of the way and we did get overtaken (a lot!).

We arrived in our hotel in the Nurburgring complex and headed straight out again 

Right outside our hotel was the GP Circuit and we could hear an event so we wandered inside to see some amazing racing!

We then headed for the Nordschleife (otherwise known as the Green Hell) which had a tourist open slot from 5 to 7 pm.

After walking round the car park a few times to soak in the incredible atmosphere and automotive heaven we decided to grab some meat and chips at the Devils Diner. With hindsight we probably should have done that after the lap lol

The LAP

The lap itself was incredible. I just wanted to finish in 1 piece to be honest so I spent most of my lap on the right (indicating) whilst the Lambos and Porsche GT3’s school me. The craziest thing was when a Renault Scenic (old one no joke) was in pursuit of a Porker!

I got a lot of advice about the lap and I think in the dry you can make it as risky as you want. You are constantly looking in your rear view mirror to make sure you move over in time. I definitely think you need quite a few laps before you feel brave enough to take it at speed. Finally it makes you appreciate your car and that actually on a track is where you appreciate performance. ON the road you don’t take your car even close to the edge. It really wet my appetite for more track days and more importantly a proper track car … …

After about half the lap my brakes faded a little so I slowed more. Still got some great taken by some professional photographers. These photographers take random pics all throught the day and there is a photography portal which you can log into when you get home to buy any pics you want.

PROFESSIONAL SHOTS

The next day my mate hired a 2l TSI Sirocco stripped and track prepped. Cost him 200 EUROS for 2 laps although there is a 5k deposit/damage liability so although he caned it he didn’t want to push too hard either!

That afternoon we headed back home after a few pics of course.

Home sweet home – the M25 lol.

Final thing, I managed the trip there, round the ring and half way back before I needed to fill up. 750 miles-ish. I love my car. Performance when I need, space for a family of 5 and phenomenal economy… and it looks cool IMO.

cheers mate! couldnt agree more. the brakes really need upgrading. that was the first thing i said to my mate when we came off the ring. my yellow stuff pads faded pretty quick. i assume i need a decent bbk? i've read some of your posts looks like you know what you're doing on a track. i think i need a separate track car that i dont mind stripping etc. saw quite a few e36 m3s on the ring which seem perfect for this. anyway it really wet my appetite

lets just say our bromance blossomed: high speed autobahn cruising, laps of the ring, go-karting, burgers/chips and tokyo drift on blu-ray
