Hej folks! Planning on doing fluid change in the weekend. Recently i began hearing like a kloncking noise when accelerating att low speed. I read in autodata that it is common for the e90 and it is a sprocket or smth that needs to be greased in the diff. Anybody knows what they could be talking about and if the diff has to be removed from the car to take apart?

Did this today, didn't have to jack up the car, slid on back from behind the passenger side rear tire and easily pumped out about 28 oz and and entire quart (32oz) went in! I used Red Line. I am wondering if I should pick up another quart as I think it needs to fill up to the lever of the plug hole. I think it would take another 1 1/2 oz as total capacity is 1.05 quarts (33.6oz). Not sure if its worth it ?

My diff took about 1.2 qts. According to Mike Miller, the E90 diff is under engineered, and the best defense against failure is oil changes. That would also include having it at the maximum correct level.

I just did this on Thursday. I drained the fluid, it was dark grey in color, came out like water. It was so thin that I thought it came off a sewer. I can't imagine how that'd lubricate anything in there. I put the Motul in and felt the difference right off the bat. I drained out LESS than a liter... I pumped in maybe 1.5L.

Grey? Could someone have put in the wrong fluid in there before? Doesn't sound right!
Mine was tea like color where the new fluid (Red Line) was honey color.

I was just wondering if it's alright if I can use the same transfer pump I used to do my manual transmission fluid to do the rear diff also? I used Redline D6 ATF for my manual tranny fluid and I plan on using Redline 75w90 differential fluid to do this DIY.

As long as you rinse it well after each use I think you'll be fine, I rinsed mine by getting a bucket of hot water with dish detergent and flushed it by pumping the soapy water out, followed by clean water and hung the hoses to dry before putting it away for next use.

Thanks I'll do that. I was worried that there might be some water still in the pump and didn't want that to mix with the fluid. Just wanted to confirm if anyone else had done it.

Also how do you guys dispose of the water you washed the pump with? I'm guessing it shouldn't be put into the drain system like other fluids....

LB, what did you use to suck out the old fluid and put in the new one? I tried using a suction gun but just couldn't transfer more than a couple ounces in or out each time there's got to be a better way

Just use Brake Kleen. I few squirts and wipe out with a paper towel.

You need to buy a pneumatic automotive liquid transfer (vacuum) pump, like a Motive brake bleeder, or AKA oil extractor. There are many different models on the market. It's basically a big plastic can with a pneumatic hand pump that builds a vacuum in the tank, which then uses a plastic tube to pull the fluid out of the diff.

Really? I got one of those from Harbor Freight but it doesn't seem to work too well (not enough suction.)
I tried using this suction pump from Amazon, but it doesn't seem to build vacuum well (slippery fluid leaks out before I can get it to the differential)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Will try out F30's suggestion next of using a pneumatic transfer pump ... could you share a link to a good one that's known to work?

Actually I couldn't imagine anything that would work better, it pumped everything out in just a few pumps then took 4 pumps and the entire quart was in the diff, quick, clean and not a drop !

Ok, I will give it a try again this weekend. Did you trim down the inlet/outlet tubes or just use them as is?

Griots Garage used to sell a nice transfer pump, but I think it was just a re-branded Motive product. I used mine for a long time and it worked well, but I now have shop air and a real pneumatic oil extractor, which works fantastic.
